[Annoucement] QNAP x WD Special Giveaway | World Backup Day 2025 ─ Share Your Backup Story and Win the Prize! (Closed)

My story starts with 2 WD MyCloud w/external MyBook backed up on a WD MyCloud Home Duo, Fully backup about a year ago, and increment every week. You can image the wiring, and a scheduled job on a pc. It works, but not well integrated, not well centralized and does not perform well. I have been looking at a QNAP solution, but like a lot of things, not a priority until it’s too late…sometime way too late…

The QNAP & WD would make backups so easy, and centralized…the perfect solution to use.

Keeping my fingers crossed, you know why!

I backup the phones of all the family, sync the folders of my mac and the PC of my father. The university folder of one sister and then a backup to an S3 cloud of all the important data. The non-important is backup to an external HDD once a week.

I have Qnap TS-932X-2G, with 16GB RAM and swapped fan for Noctua NF-P14s redux 1200 PWM, it has 9 x Crucial MX500 2TB in RAID 5 with iSCASI share to my PC with Intel x520-DA2,
I use it to store most of my data, videos, photos etc.
I recently added a QNAP TR-004, to have my old HDDs in it, and hold a cold copy of whole main share content on it, just to be safe.

I recently set up my QNAP HS-264 to more easily automate my home backups on multiple systems and for media storage. Not long after I set everything up, I left for a short trip and found that the backups had become corrupted when I returned, likely due to one of my drives beginning to fail.

Thankfully, I was able to restore all of my files that had been saved by the snapshot feature, and I was able to continue using everything as if nothing had happened at all. This was a huge win for me and saved me countless hours of time and effort. Thank you QNAP for making such a great product that’s so easy to use!

Hi everyone!

April 30th marks World Backup Day, and I’m here to share my eight-year love story with QNAP NAS—because trust me, backups aren’t just about “以防万一”… they’re about saving your digital life.

Let’s start with the cold, hard truth: 78% of us say we back up our data, but only 33% do it consistently. :scream: I used to be part of that 78%—until I lost 500GB of family photos in a single hard drive failure. That’s when I vowed never to let data loss control my life again. Enter QNAP NAS—and specifically, the TS-873A with QuTS hero, which transformed my backup strategy into a fortress of reliability.

My QNAP Evolution: From TS-453mini to TS-873A QuTS hero

Eight years ago, my first QNAP TS-453mini introduced me to automated backups and version control. But upgrading to the TS-873A with QuTS hero felt like unlocking a data superhero. Here’s why:

1. ZFS File System: Enterprise-Grade Data Guardian

QuTS hero’s ZFS file system isn’t just another storage solution—it’s a self-healing fortress. Unlike traditional file systems, ZFS automatically detects and repairs silent data corruption using end-to-end checksums . It even supports WORM (Write Once, Read Many) compliance, ensuring critical files like contracts or financial records remain immutable once stored . This is a game-changer for businesses and families alike: no accidental deletions, no ransomware tampering—just absolute data integrity.

2. Near-Real-Time Snapshots & Remote Replication

With QuTS hero, I’m not just backing up—I’m future-proofing. Its Snapshot Replication creates up to 65,536 instant snapshots of shared folders, allowing me to roll back files to any previous state in seconds . And thanks to Real-time SnapSync, every change on my primary NAS is instantly mirrored to a remote backup NAS or cloud storage . Last year, when a power surge fried my local NAS, I restored everything from a remote snapshot vault in under 15 minutes. No downtime, no panic—just seamless recovery.

3. Hybrid Backup & Deduplication

QNAP’s Hybrid Backup Sync 4 (HBS 4) is the ultimate backup swiss army knife. It consolidates local, remote, and cloud backups into one tool, following the 3-2-1 rule (3 copies, 2 storage types, 1 offsite) . Even better, QuDedup 2.0 reduces backup sizes by up to 75% using block-level deduplication, slashing storage costs and speeding up transfers . For my 4K video projects, this means backing up 100GB of raw footage in minutes instead of hours.

4. AI-Powered Threat Detection

QuTS hero doesn’t just store data—it protects it. Its AI-Powered Threat Detection monitors file activity for suspicious behavior (like ransomware encryption patterns) and quarantines threats before they spread . When a colleague accidentally downloaded a malware-infected file last month, the system blocked it automatically, sparing us a potential disaster.

5. Performance Beast: ZFS Under the Hood

On the TS-873A, QuTS hero’s ZFS architecture shines. With multi-level caching (DRAM read cache + SSD cache), it delivers blazing read speeds—perfect for editing 8K videos or running virtual machines . And thanks to RAID Z (ZFS’s native RAID), I can configure storage pools that tolerate up to three drive failures without skipping a beat .

Forum Horror Stories: Why “Backup Tomorrow” Is a Death Sentence

I’ve seen countless threads where users share nightmares:

  • “My laptop died, and I lost all my thesis research.”
  • “A ransomware attack wiped my business files—no backups = game over.”
  • “My phone got stolen, and my kid’s first steps were gone forever.”

Sound familiar? Backup procrastination is the enemy. But with QuTS hero, you’re not alone. The community here is stacked with tips: schedule daily backups during off-hours, use hybrid cloud storage for redundancy, and enable QuDedup to save space without sacrificing safety.

World Backup Day Challenge: Audit Your Strategy

This World Backup Day, I’m challenging myself—and all of you—to audit your backup strategy. Ask:

  • Are my backups automated?
  • Do I test restores regularly?
  • Could I recover critical files in under 15 minutes?

If the answer to any is “no,” it’s time to level up. QNAP NAS isn’t just a tool—it’s a lifeline.

Final thought: Data loss isn’t a “maybe.” It’s a “when.” Don’t let it catch you off guard. Share your backup story below and join the #WorldBackupDay movement!

I’m fortunate (or maybe unfortunate, depending on perspective!) to have a needed-backup story.

Two years ago, I was working late and punch-drunk tired and was doing clean-up on my desktop space to close out the work day. I’d meant to shift+delete an old folder, but I accidentally managed to wipe out an active project that was close to deadline instead—three weeks of work was lost just like that. My heart stopped. But then I remembered I had options:

My QNAP NAS had snapshots and versioning enabled. Within seconds, I was very relieved to recover my latest saved version of the folder to my backup drives in the bays. The project was restored, and I could finally breathe again. Crisis averted. I was able to meet the client deadline, and they never knew about the disaster QNAP helped avert.

Since then, I’ve always kept versioning and snapshots enabled on my QNAP NAS—because mistakes happen, but losing work shouldn’t have to.

Of course! Here I am, sharing my thoughts in this forum and in this exciting world of NAS.

That small but powerful device that can do so many things, but its greatest ability is… to save your life when everything seems to go wrong and a cunning hacker decides to encrypt all your most valuable data.

But first, let me take you back to the beginnings of my experience with NAS backups, as my story with Qnap began over 14 years ago.

At that time, I decided to buy the first TS-459Pro+, which I sold to an important client and in which I placed my trust to safeguard their data. Although some may not believe it, that NAS is still operational! I only had to replace the power supply a few years ago due to a failure in the UPS it was connected to, but the drives remained intact.

In fact, it has been running for 14 years and, surprisingly, with the same 2TB Hitachi drives without any SMART failures! Incredible, but true. It has functioned as iSCSI for VMware virtual machines, has received backups from Acronis and Nakivo via NFS… but the best part is that it was the hero of the company, as when we suffered a couple of encryptions from WannaCry, it was there, providing the backups that restored the client’s virtual servers.

From that first NAS to the more recent ones with Hero that I have used, going through various ranges and processors like that of the TVS-675, the evolution and improvement have been undeniable.

However, I want to offer you a more fun and engaging perspective to commemorate this backup day, so I will show you what a typical day would look like in a digital world full of threats, where Qnap supports us all.
