Download Station EOL - What do people use?

Yesterday QNAP released an update for Download Station along with a note that this is the final update for Download Station and that the app is officially EOL and will be removed from the App Center. I am not necessarily beholden to it. So not a problem.

What other apps to people use for downloading/torrenting/etc. I saw that @Silas has released an app but I haven’t proceeded to install it yet. That looks pretty slick but wondering what people use.

I’ve been running Transmission for as long as I can remember, across other platforms (D-Link, Rasp Pi, etc) as well as currently on QNAP.

I usually use qbittorrent via a vpn on an old networked laptop that I can leave chugging away without it interfering with anything else.

Well this is how my journey with QNAP started I was not happy about 20 yrs ago with download station. I mean Download Station is not bad, it’s based on rasterball - competitors Download apps are also on this. And within this 20 years I did many setups, heavy network simulation with incredible expensive network components even to simulate ISP on bridge devices out of free tcp ports. Well, it’s funny, Transmission is the slowest one. Qbittorrent is just popular one and in theory faster, closer to Deluge, but what a interesting thing - aria2 which is is theory the fastest one like QNAPs Download Station on rasterball. But no one use it.
Theory - I mean just a one torrent download at all, because if managing multiple connections like seadboxes or when you really need performance everything changes 180 deg. Many many people thinks rtorrent is the heaviest one and not light weight. Yes and No. Rtorrent loves ram. 4GB of RAM is very minimum for 1GbE link downloads. 8GB for 2.5GbE. And at least 24Gb-32 for 10GbE ISP. But the difference with all those torrent clients is that rtorrent will handle this 10GbE link properly even if many downloads jobs run simultaneously.

But some people use VPN they don’t even care about speed. Others just downloads anything from anywhere - so download client doesn’t matter to them.

Anyway don’t worry I can show you how quickly you can build and drop as a package manually with no skills and no AI help aria, transmission or qbittorrent as QPKG.
So hmm …
I has to record video …

But in mean time:
You can watch video:

Workflow there is almost unchanged for years, has been designed together with QNAP users to simplify torrents management on big NAS rack models where users hosts more than thousand, sometimes 50k torrent jobs.

OK. So I’m not running QuTS 6 yet (hesitant to upgrade at this point). I get this error when I try to install Rtorrent:

Is there a way to update glibc on a QuTS 5.x NAS?

Ma, many QNAP apps were out AFAIK due to UE new regulations and I think  it was also a good opurtunity to abandon not popular apps, especially if ppl use alternatives. :man_shrugging:

But hold a second
they must give something in exchange otherwise monday on helpdesk service someone gets :water_pistol:
( Pls just wait couple days, maybe hours

FYI
I already used in prev builds Rtorrent-Pro and 15 workaround/force settings on network interfaces and modified kernel buffers affecting other services. I simply can’t rise them again on previous glibc. So can’t help you with that. But if you really really want to play something …

"
Sorry, the file you are trying to upload is not authorized (authorized extensions: jpg, jpeg, png, gif, heic, heif, webp, avif, svg, jxl)."

?? What is this??

Im sorry I had no time yesterday.

Uploaded just here. With this code studio you can build any app you want from sources and build qpkg. Receips are ready. If you need AI help you can install Ai agent depends on your preferences

Thanks. I’ll have to take a look. I may just upgrade to QuTS 6 as I am going to have to do it eventually…

The title looked like something I would be interested in, too bad the video and description are of no value (at least I didn’t see any point in it).

I just saw an alternative here:

The code seems OK to me. And the feature to establish download from messenger seems interesting and I will going to give it a try.

Yes looks interesting but it appears to have no search capability…

I watched about the first 2/3 of the video. It looks pretty cool, but I think I would need more assistance than what the video provides to actually build a package. But if you know what you are doing then this is very, very, very cool. It looks great @silas, but I am not sure I’d be able to build an app. I’ll have to play with it.

Part of your video is in Polish. While I live in what is the largest Polish community outside of Warsaw (I’m near Chicago and in the town where I live I would say at least 50% of the people speak Polish), I speak none!

Hello

this is my NAS

Model name TS-531P
CPU Annapurna Labs Alpine AL314 Quad-core ARM Cortex-A15 CPU @ 1.40GHz
Total memory 8 GB (8 GB usable)
Multi-channel support No
Firmware version QTS 5.2.10.3577 Build 20260731

I cannot install the r16 package for ARM. I get

Error 2026-10-06 11:29:42 xxxxx Web Desktop Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (K App Center App Installation [App Center] Failed to install Rtorrent 16 16.24-06K. The installation package is incompatible. Use the compatible package.

I did my homework as explained in the video from the developers at App Center · every package on this site, on one page but the r16 is not displayed in Wnaputilities in the app center. Linking I just see Enterstd and StorageDIag

Please help

I see the issue could be QTS version right? I have QTS5 and the apps seems suitabile from QTS6 onward

I guess a video with a bunch of stuff I can’t read and music I had to mute with no description or even a talking walkthrough as not my style

I have a number of projects I’d love to build and package and would love to find a decent starting guide.

Agreed @dosborne. I think the video is more of a sales pitch than a tutorial for how to do something. It shows what the package can do (which seems like a lot), shows the package is slick and well done, but it really does not give the information needed to actually walk through an example of how to do it. He goes through several different things there in the video, but is that showing features or are all those steps needed to build a package?

Hi, what I did like about Download Station was the android qget app front end. Is there something similar for other torrent downloaders where I can add and remove torrents from my phone without having to login in to Download Station on QNAP NAS itself ?

Thanks

I use transmission with tremotesf

Simple but works great

As @dolbyman mentions, there is one that he uses, I use another “transmission remote”. I use an app on my android phone and tablet and use a windows app on my laptop / desktop for managing and tracking the downloads.

Although there are many good options, I started using Transmission 15+ (?) years ago on a D-Link NAS, then moved it over to QNAP partly due to the existing setup I had running, but also because I wanted simplicity of installing a QPKG. There may be better and newer ones out there, but I also have it fully automated with a torrent scraper so I wake up to an “inbox” of TV shows from the previous night ready to be watched. The multiple client app and platforms supports makes this my choice. As it is all automated, I don’t care about speed, although I can’t say if it is faster or slower than other options, as long as the stuff I want is there when I wake up

Enough of the sales pitch, many options out there, it shouldn’t be hard to find one that meets your needs.
