Faulty drive and smart scan can't run

Hello, I’m on QTS 5.2.9.3410
My nas is TS-453S pro ( 4* 2.5” 1to drives )

I have a warning for one hdd. It had 2 bad blocks in previous smart scans , but now SMART cannot run anymore ( quick or deep tests ). When I launch a SMART scan it immediately displays an error. ( translated from French : “reading - impossible”)
In raid 5, can I go on until I get notified that the drive is dead ( if my qnap can do that ), or is it safe to replace immediately ?
I have one more replacement drive, but I can’t find 2.5” red sata drives anymore.
I guess you will tell me to replace, but maybe the drive is still working despite the SMART issue ?
I don’t remember if my qnap will tell to replace the drive.
I have already replaced one drive ; this setup is about 9 years old.

The choice is always yours, but if a drive is starting to have issues, it is only likely to get worse.

It all depends on what you use it for, how critical the data is to you and what you external backup situation is.

Only you can decide what is right.

Thank you for your answer. To be more precise, my question is : does qts warn me that the drive must be replaced ( irreversible error or other ) ? In that case, unless I’m mistaken, with raid five, reconstruction of my storage will be done when I insert a new drive to replace the faulty one.

The diagnostics give you a status. It is up to you to decide if it warrants replacing the drive.

NEVER EVER count on RAID as your backup. EVER.

The excess work required to rebuild a RAID array has in many cases caused a second drive to fsil during the rebuild. This leads to complete (usually) data loss.

When to replace the drive is up to you. As I stated, it depends on how important your data is and how good your backup strategy is. Some people would replace it at the first signs of a problem, other people will wait until complete failure.

Thank you, I will not take chances then and replace it now.
It is sad though that production of 2.5” red drives seems to have stopped ( can’t find any in French online stores or even amazon ), ssds are very expensive at the moment even for 1tb , so I might soon have to give up on my qnap nas, which is a shame.

Regarding the situation you’ve described, please ensure that you have a complete backup of your data to maintain its security. Additionally, if you are looking to upgrade, you might consider choosing a NAS model that supports 3.5-inch HDDs. We currently offer a “Trade-in” promotion that you may find beneficial. Thank you for your support!
