firmware upgrade fails

Apparently; firmware upgrades are not automatic and regular maintenance has been ignored on two QNAP devices.

Both systems are: Model:TS-421 Current firmware version:4.3.3.2057 Date:2022/06/23

I notice Status = A new firmware version is available. Click “Check for update” to update.

I click “Check for update”; 4.3.3.2784 Build 20240619 is available for download.

On first system; click “OK” and upgrade is installed without issue.

On the second system with same “current firmware” as above; I click “Check for update”.
Downloading firmware proceeds from 0% to 100%; no issue.
Then “Updating system” Upgrade proceeds to 30% then I get:
Failed to update system. The firmware file format is abnormal. Error Code: 4.

What is my next step?

How about a manual update ?

You may want to take a look at your settings as well once you get it up to date. There is an option for automatic updates, although personally I like to do this manually so I don’t get any surprises, but up to you to decide. There are options for that.

BTW: that ancient NAS model won’t receive any further firmware updates. The version available is the final version released.

So, further firmware checks are not needed.

I mean official support has ended in 2017, so that QNAP has released any updates in 2024 is commendable (even if it was for a potential catastrophic security flaw)
