Memory leak in the smbd-notifyd process

I would like to share an issue we are experiencing with two QNAP TS-983XU-RP servers. For more than eight months, we have been experiencing system hangs with no apparent cause. We eventually discovered that the system process called SMBD-NOTIFYD is exhausting the server’s RAM because it is unable to release the memory it consumes.

The NAS is joined to an Azure AD DS domain and serves approximately 70-80 users. After following all of QNAP’s recommendations, including performing a factory reset, the solution they ultimately provided, after we identified that the issue was related to this process, was simply to disable it.

Disabling the process prevents us from updating the firmware and creates problems for users, since this service is responsible for keeping files and folders synchronized and up to date in memory for each user.

Has anyone else experienced this issue? Are we really the only company in the world facing this problem?

QNAP’s proposed solution feels like a workaround rather than a real fix, and I am beginning to think they are unable to resolve the root cause.

I am posting this in case someone has had a similar experience, and to understand whether others also find QNAP technical support to be as inadequate as it appears to be.

Thank you.

Héctor
