Migrating from dead TS-251+ to TS-253A

Hey I’m helping a friend get his data back from a dead TS-251+. I followed migration guide and found a used TS-253A for cheap. When i insert the disks (It’s SSD’s bit cloned of the HDD’s) it just starts “Smart installation”. I cant even see if it detects the disk. Ultimately it wants to initialize so it clearly doesnt see the previuous file system…
What do i do now? was this a waste of money?
I’ll try and list some facts here:

  • Operating system version is unknown.
  • RAID level unknown.
  • 2 drives (2 x 2 TB WD RED) - I bit cloned these to avoid data loss. One of them has a bunch of smart errors.
  • Drive order also unknown as i got them seperated from the 251 itselt.
  • Destination NAS 253A is running QTS version 5.0.1.2425

I just need the data, so if there is another way of recovering these im all ears.

Help would be apreciated. I’ll try and answer questions the best i can if im missing something above.

I would pull all the drives and update the NAS while it’s empty.
Then try to boot with the original HDDs once.

QTS is all mdadm and EXT4, so if you can get a linux box up and running you should be able to see the arrays and mount the file systems.
I hope friend didn’t encrypt anything because that stuff I don’t know about.

There could also be an LVM layer on top, if it used storage pools.

Tools like Linux reader or paid recovery tools like UFSExplorer should also deal with it

Tell your friend to have backups in the future…no, a RAID is not a backup (as seen)

Thanks for the prompt replies. I updated the firmware on the 253A to version 5.1.8.2823. Tried once with the SSD’s but no cigar. Then i tried with the HDD’s and now i can see it in qnap finder, and it tells me system migration is succesfull :slightly_smiling_face: Dunno what went wrong with the clones…
I ordered 2 new WD reds.
I’m wating for the login from my friend so right now i cant see how the disks are configured.
I’m hoping i can just switch out one disk at a time and rebuild
And yeah i told him to keep a backup in the future

Bit copying rarely works. Drive information does not match and it is not a supported option.

You could do a 3 second reset (lots of posts on how that works and how to do it) to clear network settings and admin password instead of waiting for your friend.

The drive WWN’s won’t match between the originals and the clones, as these have to be unique, and these are critical to the function of the NAS.

Thanks for all the replies. I used the 3 sec reset option and i got in. Currently rebuilding with a new disk.
Never used this OS before but it looks really sleak. A bit strange it doesnt warn me about all the smart errors on one of the disks, but maybe it’s disabled somewhere i dunno

As far as I can tell it ships with ZERO default notifications.

You need to go to the notification manager and write your own rules.
Which I think is incredibly stupid.

Errors will appear in the System logs.
You can run or schedule disk checks.
It’s up to the user to check his system…

Obviously it cannot send things like email notifications if you haven’t configured any smtp account…
