I had to run sherpa fix once after I’ve proceeded as you described and now it works fine again.
I have a question that might reveal my ignorance. But how is it possible that SABnzbd stopped working, even though I haven’t updated either the firmware or SABnzbd? Are certain files or data updated automatically each time, and is there a way to prevent that (if that even makes sense)? You know the old saying: never touch a running system 
.
Yes, it’s possible. The default for a long time was to update the application files on each service-script restart (“auto-update”). I changed this default earlier this year, and it’s now set to not update the application files. But it only applies to new installations.
You can check the current setting for SABnzbd with:
/etc/init.d/sabnzbd.sh status
One of the output lines is called application auto-update, and the setting will be true or false.
To disable auto-updating:
/etc/init.d/sabnzbd.sh disable-auto-update
To see the other options available:
/etc/init.d/sabnzbd.sh

I don’t know why this is happening. 
Let’s disable the check for unbound variables in service.lib and see how far we can get.
If you edit service.lib, the first executable line is:
set -o nounset
Please comment this line out, so it looks like this:
