QVR Surveillance update breaks Apple TV Compatibility

I have a ticket open for this (Q-202512-61740) but I wanted to bring awareness to the fact that the QVR Surveillance update (from QVR Elite on my TVS-h1288X in my case) results in a situation where the QVR Viewer app for Apple TV can no longer connect. This is a pretty big deal for us, as it was one of the selling points of the ecosystem that we could use any TV in the house to view our cameras. We have dedicated user accounts for the apple tvs with custom views etc. When you attempt to log in with QVR Viewer, you get the error “A remote server error has occurred.” I was told by support that even though it’s still on the Apple TV App Store, support for the app has been discontinued since 2024. Unlike for iOS and iPadOS, QVR Pro client isn’t made available to Apple TV. Support did give me a copy of QVR Elite to re-install. That was a time and a half because besides the camera settings export, pretty much everything has to be set up from scratch. But I did it and it does work again on my Apple TVs.

At this point it seems like the answer will be that Apple TVs are just no longer supported, which is a shame as there is nothing in the sales materials making it clear they won’t work anymore. I imagine that my time using QVR Elite will be short lived as I have blocked the auto-update as best I can, it is still marked as a required update and will probably cause me firmware update issues in the future, especially as 6.x is on the horizon.

Hmm… I have QVR Pro on my AppleTV. And you are correct. I get the same error.

QNAP - This is a big problem. We use the AppleTV for viewing stuff like this!

Hi @heymrdj @NA9D sorry that QVR Viewer for Apple TV is no longer supported, we did not validate whether it would continue to work properly with QVR Surveillance, and we missed this interoperability issue.

After internal review, we will evaluate and prepare an updated build of the QVR Viewer to restore compatibility with the QVR Surveillance.

It has been almost two years since the last QVR Viewer update, and we need to confirm the changes in the Apple TV SDK over that period. This may take some time to address, we apologize again for the inconvenience.

That would be awesome. I think the changes in the AppleTV SDK should not be an issues as the current version of QVR Viewer worked fine when I was running QVR Pro.

I don’t know why you decided to end support for it. Maybe not a lot of people were using it? I have found it to be quite a nice tool to have so I can easily view my cameras on any TV in my home.

Hey,

Just bought myself a ts233 for data storage etc and for my ip camera’s. Installed app in my Apple TV and tried to connect to QVR surveillance on my nas. Dont work🤔. Error in server on display🥴. Now reading in topics that it doesn’t work. When update???

Well, as you see above, QNAP is going to release an updated build of the AppleTV app. We don’t know when this will be. Hopefully pretty quickly.

I just want to say I truly appreciate QNAP stepping up to this and committing to resolving the issue. I know it can take some time, but the quick reply committing resources to the problem makes the customer service experience.

Thank you very much for testing too. I figured not many people used it. I was late to upgrade to Surveillance because I do not want to accidentally lose recordings at the time so I wished I had tested sooner and gotten that feedback to QNAP. But it makes me glad I’m not the only one out here!
