replacing my HDD in qnap nas

Help please

Im very new to all this and have just had my WD Red NAS Hard drive (WD60EFRX) crash and now have had it returned to me after having all my data recovered now on a portable drive

I have a TS-231P qnap nas and im finding out that they no longer make the above HDD

Im not sure what Hard drive to buy as there are lots of conflicting and confusing recommendations out there, some saying i need to use the same HD, same Capacity, etc

Need to install all my data back onto the NAS

any help would be great!!

Not sure where you see the conflicting informations.

But to clarify: your configuration is RAID 1, currently with only 1 disk (the other failed), correct? If so, the new drive just needs to be of at least the same size, and compatible with the NAS model. And the new drive has to be plugged in while the NAS is powered on.

If you were only using 1 disk, there is no requirement on size.

Compatibility list: Compatibility List - QNAP

no diwiwi, i have a 2 bay qnap but there was only one drive of 6TB, which i recovered but now need to replace what i put into the qnap…. i understand 2 drives, to back up each other? is that RAID 1?

so i can now put in 2 HDD and only buy 1or 2TB each one? ( 6TB was too big i think)

and just as long as its on the compatability list it will be ok?

Don’t mix up RAID and Backup

The rest of the question makes not much sense, please explain again

It sounds like you need a new drive, almost any drive will do, as long as it is a minimum of the size of your data. Setup and configure the NAS from scratch, then copy the data from the “portable drive” onto the NAS.

Consider buying 2 drives for your NAS, it will give you a RAID-1 option, which isn’t a backup, but does protect against some data loss scenarios.

I’d be inclined to just fit a single drive and set up HBS3 to periodically backup / sync your data to an external USB portable drive. i.e. you can get a new WD 4TB portable HDD for around £100. Ideally you could do with a 3rd backup copy of any really vital data.

I would always run a two bay NAS in RAID1, too many times have I seen people asking question what to do on single disk failure (even if they had backups, they want to avoid having to re-setup the NAS with all apps and settings)

basically my 2bay qnap only ever had 1- 6TB HDD, that crashed got it recovered onto a portable little HD but now need to transfer that data back onto a new HDD for my qnap NAS, i dont need 6TB happy with 1TB or2TB HDD, but will put 2 into the qnap and let them mirror? eachother?

as i said i am very computer and IT illiterate sorry

this sounds like exactly what I need to do, thankyou, the 2 you have listed will work in my NAS like before?

Put two disks of whatever desired size in your NAS and set them up as RAID1 (see manual)

Ok, so in this case, you can use any disk (listed in the compatibility list), of any size (but bigger than your data).

But you would need to reconfigure everything on the NAS.

If you have a 2-bays NAS, it is recommended to configure the storage with 2 disks in RAID 1.
The data will be mirrored on the 2 disks (but not a backup). That allows you to not lose anything if one drive fails. And can also easily replace the disks, also with larger ones, if you need more storage in the future.

thanks so much!

one last question before i order… the plastic case/surround that hold the HDD has mark that says 2.5” so the one i get has to have the same? because there is a choice between 2.5” and 3.5”, sorry about my complete lack of knowledge….

You can install 3.5” and 2.5” drives in a TS-231P

https://www.qnap.com/en/product/ts-231p/specs/hardware

I am not sure which marks you are referring to..

You can check the Quick Guide (TS-x31 Quick Installation Guide) on how to install the drives

Thanks diwiwi! now i understand thanks for all your help
