So I have two almost identical TS-251+
Differences are:
the BIOS on one of them (I will name it “NAS new”) is version QW37AR41 and on the other (“NAS old”) is version QW37AR32.
“NAS new” is using two 6GB WD Red Pros in RAID1 while “NAS old” uses two 6GB WD Reds (no Pro) in RAID1.
Until yesterday both were running the exact same firmware (QTS 5.2.6.3195), apps etc.
I was struggling lately (a year or so) with viewing QVR Pro recordings on multiple Windows 10 pro laptops, my Samsung phone and a Samsung tablet.
Just to show the folder listing in Explorer took forever and to view a recording was out of question.
Today I started the “NAS old” from scratch. Only, after it finished installing all the initial things, I downgraded it to firmware 4.5.4.2467 and then installed all the apps I have on the “NAS new”.
Now the “NAS old” runs QVR Pro version 2.2.0.0 and “NAS new” runs version 2.7.1.1259
Since this morning there were some recordings already on the testing “NAS old”.
Length of recordings is set at 2 minutes per file and there are three cameras recording 24/7.
Opening Explorer and navigating to the “NAS old” recordings is really snappy like it used to be.
I should ditch these old TS-251+ and buy some newer models, right ?

The root cause should be the firmware QTS 5.2.6, we have confirmed that this firmware has excessive performance issues on older models and have removed it from the website. You can refer to this discussion about QTS 5.2.6

You can try downgrading “NAS new” to QTS 5.2.5 first, and it should become as smooth as “NAS old”.
So I updated the “NAS new” to 5.2.6.3229 and I don’t see any improvement.
Just to clear it a bit, it is not about how responsive the TS-251+ is when accessing it through the web interface.
It is about accessing the QVR Pro recordings using Windows file explorer or accessing them in Android phone or tablet.
In my opinion there must be something about QVR pro recordings.
Still in the “NAS old” accessing the recordings are instant. On the “NAS new” it takes forever just to show a folder content.
For example using Windows file explore to navigate to “\10.10.10.22\QVRProRecording\File\Standard_Format\Ch005_Front door\Normal01\2025-08-25\17” which is on the old NAS is fast as expected. Opening one .mp4 in VLC is instant.
Navigating to the new NAS to “\10.10.10.33\QVRProRecording\File\Standard_Format\Ch005_Front door\Normal01\2025-08-25\17” just takes forever to show the .mp4 files. To open a file using VLC is another forever.
Yes I do have both CAYIN Media viewer and MediaSign Player installed.
I am accessing all recordings over smb connection from Windows and some Android devices all of them being really slow showing folder content and opening .mp4 files to the point I give up.
I did try all combinations of smb versions with no improvement.
Again, on the “old NAS” everything still works as fast as expected.
