The best option would be an external stick with Kodi (via SMB). It can handle all current formats, unlike a 14-year-old TV.

Thanks, what does extra stick mean? I have an Amazon (device) for possibly Mediathek — do I need to install anything else on it? How?

Amazon Firestick (depending on the model) does not allow sideloading.

An Android stick should fit best.
