TS-459 Pro II RAID-5 failure – strange drive/bay behavior, need advice

Hi all,

I’m looking for advice on a failing RAID-5 on a QNAP TS-459 Pro II.

History:

RAID-5 with 4 disks (many years stable)

  • Recently I saw a red light on Drive 3 and logged in to check.

Current strange behavior:

  • Disks 1 & 2 show “Ready” in QTS with model + SMART, but no HDD LEDs

  • Disk 3 shows “Ready” but 0 MB capacity, no model, no SMART

  • Disk 4 sometimes shows green LED but appears as “No Disk” in QTS

  • Swapping disks between bays causes the same issues to follow the bay, not the disk. I inserted Disk 4 in bay 3 to see if it’s recognized and then Disk 1 and 2 also went “offline”.

  • A brand-new disk behaves the same in bay 3 (0 MB)

This strongly looks like a partial backplane / SATA connector failure, not multiple dead disks.

Data is important and I still have all original drives.

Would you recommend:

  • Migrating disks to another QNAP to import the RAID?

  • Or any known fixes / diagnostics for TS-x59 backplane issues?

Thanks for any guidance.

If the data is important, but you have no backups, bring the drives to a data recovery specialist.

They might be able to save the data (as it’s unclear what happened and what damage the swapping has caused)

I’ve rebuild the Raid on a linux computer and ’m already copying the data. As expected the drives still work, it’s just the qnap acting up. Do they sell replacement parts for this snaps in Europe?

QNAP does not sell internal components anywhere in the world (just power supplies, drive caddies, etc)

Also make sure to have backups in the future.

This could indeed be a device failure, but this unit is likely very old and out of warranty, correct?

Please ensure you back up your data as soon as possible. We recommend you consider replacing it with a new NAS. Thank you!
