TS-473A and TS-873A nvme drive randomly disconnects

I have two NAS at differenct locations, TS-473A, FW: h5.2.9.3410 and TS-873A FW: h5.2.5.3138

Both have 2NVME disks, different manufactures: TS-473A: Crucial, T-873A: Kingston, both 2TB

Both use RAID-1

It happend now 2 times with the TS-473, and one time with the TS-873 that one of the drive was missing in the lower slot. A restart of the NAS fixes the problem immediately.

Is this a known problem?

Do the NVMe disappear during runtime or after a reboot ?

The problem appeard without a restart, I have the suspicion it could have happend after an (unattended) upgrade of the systems

But system firmware upgrades would require a restart.

You should never enable automatic updates btw

I dont not have enabled automatic upgrades on any of the systems I control, Also Application upgrades are not enabled

My suspcion is based on the strange fact that when I logged in to the system (where I later discovered one disk was missing) I was greeted with a message to accept the qnap (whatever) polices.

Also, there is no access to the system from external.

How long have you been using the drives? Has this issue been happening all along, or did it only start recently? Thanks!

The TS873 is running since about 2023, the TS473 since 2024.

The first problem happend with the TS473, about 6 month ago, then about 3 month ago with the 873, then about 4 weeks ago again with the 473

Have those NVME drives been running that long in the NAS as well? I would check how much lifetime you have left on those drives. I’ve got some NVME drives I’ve run for a year and they are already down to about 75% so I would suspect that your drives may be getting somewhat old and perhaps that’s the reason they are dropping out…

It’s a guess but worth looking into.

Thank you,

the drives are at 70 (TS473)/ 59 (TS873)

this is not like a new one but both drives show good health, and pass a weekly smart test.

OK. Well, that’s good and not the problem then…

You may refer to the two FAQs below for troubleshooting when a drive drops from the NAS — the first covers initial troubleshooting, and the second is for more advanced log analysis. If you have any questions, feel free to bring them up for discussion. Thanks!

I did not find kernel log analysis in the helpdesk app. However, I downloaded the logs. Since the problem happend a 21th of september, there is not much left. It seems the logs start at the 25, where I most likely did the restart.

Next time I will watch more closely.
