TVS-672XT Troubles

Hey all,

Today I received back my TVS-672XT from Nicks Electronics. I should have started it up and verified things were working first, but I didn’t.

As per another thread, I was looking into what CPU upgrades I could make. I have purchased both an i7-9700K and an i7-8700T. I tried both and the unit just sat there and the display said “Booting System” and then went blank and nothing happened.

So I eventually went and put the same stock i3 back in there. Same thing. Nothing.

Called Nick’s. They said, “It was working here. Try booting without the drives in it.”

So I removed all my drives (SSD M.2 included) and tried booting. Nothing.

I have pressed the yellow reset button on the motherboard and I can get:

BIOS 0012AT13
Checking Memory

On the display but that is it.

Is there something else fried here? Is there something else I can do before I send this back to Nicks? I hate to do that as it will mean I am w/o this for another couple weeks…

Yeah I hope you did not fry any components switching the CPU, I would have at least booted it up after that repair to see if the repair actually works. If they ask, better not to mention that you tried to swap the CPU whistles

Yeah. I shouldn’t have fried anything though. The units are all listed as compatible. The only concern about the i7-9700K was that it consumed higher power and might have thermal issues. But they are all supposed to be drop-in compatible.

No, I am not telling them anything!

Yeah - my mistake not booting first…

I don’t remember details, but there was also certain minimum BIOS versions or even microcode manipulations that people did to add CPU support.

But if even the original CPU does not work, that seems mute for now.

Right. I could understand if neither of the i7s worked. But the original should have. I don’t think the packaging all all that great when they shipped it. Something could have gone kaput in the hands of USPS…

Better hope they don’t read these forums

Or that someone doesn’t email them a link to this topic.

Seriously, if you’re going to do the wrong thing, it’s best kept to yourself.

Well is what it is. I have been told that the CPU change would not be an issue of harming the device. There’s a whole other thread on that.

If I’d powered the unit up and it worked and then I switched CPUs and fried it, then I would know it was me. Now at least there’s a chance that something got busted in shipping and it can be fixed…

Definitely an unfortunate situation. Hard to go back to the repair guys and hard to blame the shipper…..

Since it fails on (or at least around) the memory check, have you tried the original memory or swapping it out (if you have an alternative) or at least reseating it?

Back in the day, I blew a motherboard by swapping in an upgraded, fully supported CPU too (PC, not a NAS). It was a sad day.

Well, here’s what I am hoping - as I was driving to FedEx, I realized I had not checked the memory. Did one or both of the modules get knocked out or weren’t seated properly. Slim chance I know.

At least the repair shop will tell me what is wrong and if they can or can’t fix it and what the charge might be…Who knows…

So I wanted to update everyone on the saga of my TVS-672XT…

Nick’s Electronics received it and proceeded to find the problem. There were five bent pins in the socket. They repaired those and the unit booted right up. They did several additional test and let it run at their place for several days and it was all good.

I jut got the unit back today and it powered right up.

Now - where did the bent pins come from? Yeah, likely a mistake I made when putting the “replacement” CPU in the socket. I asked NIck’s if I owed them any more and they never responded. So five stars to them. I would highly recommend them for any NAS repairs.

So, after getting the unit back, did I replace the CPU?

Yes. I debated if I should try the i7-9100K or the i7-8700T. I ended up playing it conservative and putting in the i7-8700T this time as the power consumption on the 9100K is quite a bit higher (65 W vs. 35 W). I want to do some more research and see if anyone is using the 9100K in this model. I don’t know if there is sufficient headroom in the power supply, etc. I would think thermally it would be OK. The NAS has a pretty good size heatsink and two fans blowing across it.

So, did the i7-8700T work? Like a charm. Booted right up!

Maybe I’ll hang onto the 9100K and try it when I am in a better position to buy a new NAS if I blow something up!
