3rd party RAM options

I would be happy to buy QNAP OEM RAM; however, QNAP’s prices are way out of line compared to the marketplace. I need 3x 48GB RAM sticks for a TVS-AIh1688ATX-U9-48G, but together they cost almost ½ what the actual base NAS costs. Based on the QNAP model #, I have extrapolated that it’s a DDR5 UDIMM with a clock speed of 5600. As such, seems that Crucial Pro 48GB DDR5-5600 UDIMM would be the perfect match and at ⅓ the cost that lets me fully populate the NAS w/o causing an uproar up the chain of command. Ironically, there’s a good chance that Crucial/Micron OEMs the RAM for QNAP as we all know QNAP doesn’t actually make their own RAM. Thoughts?

QNAP RAM is the biggest scam that there is. There is nothing special about their DIMM modules. The systems run on standard CPU cores with standard BIOS implementations. Their claim that you need their memory modules is 100% bogus. They tell this to gullible people and use it to increase their profit margins.

I have 3 NAS units and NONE have QNAP RAM. In fact, what is funny is that everyone one of them has shipped from QNAP with, wait for it… 3rd party RAM!! Yes, they don’t even ship their own modules in their NAS units!

In numerous support tickets I have had, one of the first things QNAP technicians would say was, “Are you using 3rd party RAM? That could be your problem.” In only one instance was that true as I had RAM from a non-standard company. It got to the point that one time (actually more than once), QNAP had me run a memory test. Guess what - my 3rd part RAM passed with flying colors. Yeah, after a couple of those, they stopped asking me that question!

I have RAM from Crucial and Corsair in my NAS units.

You should easily be able to look up the RAM requirements for the particular CPU that your system is using. Just make sure that you follow these recommendations:

1.) Make sure you get the correct clock speed

2.) Buy from a quality company and not some Asian knock-off that is low cost. Some of that RAM is not good.

You will be fine.

While the RAM is very overpriced, it is sadly true that some QNAP NAS models are/were very picky, when it came to the RAM modules.

The old forum had long topics for plenty of NAS units, discussing success and failure with modules.

The German qnap forum actually has a collaboration with a memory store that has tested compatible modules (at a discount for forum members)

Always keep your original for troubleshooting / support purposes.

Personally, I don’t expect the vendor, in this case, to support any random part vendor. I feel it is fulling in their rights to say they only support specific components, in this case RAM, just like they list specific hard drive models, SSD, etc. They can’t invest millions of dollars in testing every combination. Sure, they could try and support 1 or 2 major 3rd party brands, but RAM is notoriously finicky.

Oh, I don’t disagree with you. But qualifying ONLY your OWN RAM modules and then charging 4x the price of the market is just bad and slimy business. It’s my biggest complaint about QNAP.

Typical across many products. Always best to purchase anything like this with the resources you need up front and not count on part being available, prices going up etc. At least the RAM is upgradable in your unit and not maxed out, or soldered to the MB.

I replace the memory in my units with my own purchased memory. but i did research what qnap uses as they rebrand other brands memory. In my case i found the kingston memory model for the 32GB sized dimm and ordered 4 of them. I believe the OP can do a similar thing with their unit.

Just remember Ram pricing is almost double what it was a month or two ago since AI companies are buying insane amounts of it right now.

If you could hold off, wait for prices to go down (hopefully). If not then maybe order the unit with enough memory to hold you until you need more. .

Worth a try. I upgraded my unit from 2GB to 16GB with Kingston RAM, but I knew the risks, kept the original RAM and bought it with a 30 day return policy. If there are any issues, you just hope it shows up right away (such as a failure to boot), not 1 year down the road.

I always consider these consumer grade devices. I buy them for what they can do with hardware and software now, not what they might be upgraded to down the road. Maybe I would expect more from the higher end units that are closer to SOHO or commercial grade, but certainly not he boxes I have.

The memory used in AI applications is likely very different than what are used on NAS units. Anything that uses DDR3 or DDR4 memory is not at all going to be used in AI server applications. Possibly there might be some DDR5 usage, but I would tend to think that the AI cores are using pretty specialized memory just for their uses and not the commercially available stuff. My company does power semiconductor products for the AI server market (we are on multiple Nvidia designs) and it’s all custom silicon for those processors. Sure there might be some fab capacity issues, but those will get resolved. I am wondering if there’s something else afoot here like tariffs or something. Of course, I am talking out my backside here and maybe it is all the AI companies buying it up…

That said, it’s deinfitely way higher. A year ago I bought a 32 Gbit kit on Amazon for $60. Today it’s showing for $150. So wow!

yeah between AI and tariffs hardware prices are going up quickly.

I was looking for DDR4 for a server a few weeks back and even used market prices have gone up. Right now i just watch for holiday deals on items i might need to save on costs, but major purchases are just going to be on hold until things normalize a bit more in the market.

@qverified you realize that QNAP doesn’t make their own RAM, right? Chances are really good that Crucial/Micron makes it for them. A quality vendor should have no issues in any server, NAS or otherwise. I have Dell PowerEdge servers with 1TB of non-Dell RAM from Micron, which, is the same exact chip Dell sells for 2-3x the cost. Even my account rep there told me she didn’t blame me.
