QNAP RAM is the biggest scam that there is. There is nothing special about their DIMM modules. The systems run on standard CPU cores with standard BIOS implementations. Their claim that you need their memory modules is 100% bogus. They tell this to gullible people and use it to increase their profit margins.
I have 3 NAS units and NONE have QNAP RAM. In fact, what is funny is that every one of them has shipped from QNAP with, wait for it… 3rd party RAM!! Yes, they don’t even ship their own modules in their NAS units!
In numerous support tickets I have had, one of the first things QNAP technicians would say was, “Are you using 3rd party RAM? That could be your problem.” In only one instance was that true as I had RAM from a non-standard company. It got to the point that one time (actually more than once), QNAP had me run a memory test. Guess what - my 3rd party RAM passed with flying colors. Yeah, after a couple of those, they stopped asking me that question!
I have RAM from Crucial and Corsair in my NAS units.
You should easily be able to look up the RAM requirements for the particular CPU that your system is using. Just make sure that you follow these recommendations:
1.) Make sure you get the correct clock speed
2.) Buy from a quality company and not some Asian knock-off that is low cost. Some of that RAM is not good.
You will be fine.
