I have a QNAP TS230 which had been fitted with a single WD 180EDFZ drive for a couple of years. In September, I added a Seagate 18TB EXOS drive and setup RAID1. That second drive worked fine but then failed recently and was replaced under warranty. This new drive is a Seagate 18TB EXOS X20. Full model number is ST18000NM003D. This model is not specifically mentioned in the compatibility list, but other EXOS 18TB drives are. The NAS is used solely for providing network access to my store of backed up movies and TV series.
Since installing this drive, when copying large files to or from the NAS, or streaming a movie on the network, the NAS will randomly reboot and, more often than not, resync the drives, which takes around 48hrs. Moving 1.5TB of movie data to a networked USB drive, rebooting will occur once or twice. Watched a 30GB 4k movie last night on a networked display, and the NAS rebooted after 30min. Other times I can write or copy numerous large files without issue. Seems so random, but it is always while a read/write process is underway.
I upgraded to the latest firmware QTS 5.2.4.3070 and rebooting still occurs. (I see there is now a new firmware, 3079, which I will now try.)
The NAS is powered by a small UPS. Thinking this might be a problem with power I have tried directly connecting the NAS to the wall socket. However, the random rebooting still occurs. Could it therefore be a problem with the QNAP supplied power supply? Or is the drive the more likely culprit?
I use Windows 11 to access the NAS, and the network is Single Port.
Appreciate any advice on how I might resolve this issue.
both those drives are not on the compatibility list I guess QNAP would blame that, but worth asking them had they even tested that new model yet?
Unless QNAP can identify a known issue i doubt you will find an answer here. Raise a ticket with them and ask them for some feedback or contact at least the dev or test team to comment.
Hi Simon. Thanks for the response. I’ll raise a ticket and point out that the WD and the original Seagate, which is the same as the current one, worked fine. Perhaps they might engage beyond the drives not being on the compatibility list. Cheers. Allan
Yes. Qnap suggested I downgrade to 5.2.3.3006. I tested today with multiple massive copies and writes I am now no longer experiencing the random reboots. Qnap have indicated they have referred to developer to determine if issue with firmware and will report on outcome.
Nice, thank you for your reply.
I’ll wait for support’s response. Maybe this can help them.
If I don’t get a response by tomorrow, I’ll downgrade.
EDIT 2025-04-03 11:45 AM : I received a response yesterday from QNAP support stating that the problem had indeed been identified by R&D.
Unfortunately, I couldn’t continue experiencing unexpected reboots. So, I rolled back to 5.2.3.3006 yesterday morning.
Today, 1 day and 1 hour of uptime, no reboot.
The problem was indeed due to firmware 5.2.4.3079 I think.
If the problems are only encountered on xxx32 NAS with AnnapurnaLabs (ARM) CPUs, it’s probably a binary compiled in x86 (not ARM) that’s lurking…
QNAP just rolled out a new firmware and asked me to test it, QTS 5.2.4.3092. I have installed it and written and copied over 200GB of data to and from the NAS and not experienced a reboot. Using 5.2.4.3079, the NAS would have rebooted at least once. The issue for me seems to have been resolved.
I have the same problem with my TS230, and today, bad reboot as I was copying files… My firmware is the last (QTS 5.2.4.3092) and I had a lot of reboots with 5.2.4.3079 ! I think that the problem is not totaly resolved… :-/
Hi vege44. Still working OK here with QTS 5.2.4.3092. Perhaps it might be worthwhile lodging a support ticket. QNAP were right on to my issue and elevated to the software engineer promptly. Cheers, Allan
Hi all, last night another reboot and difficulties to read a file via video server, I roll back to QTS 5.2.3.3006. My system have no hardware changes for a long time, so I think there is a problem with the two last firmwares…
PS: working with QTS 5.2.4.3092 for two days and no reboot at all. Everything is working fine, the last firmware seems to be ok I had roll back to QTS 5.2.3.3006 and have some updates the day after. I wait before install the last firmware.
I have had a problem with my TVS-h1688x randomly rebooting since 3 weeks ago I installed this firmware. Rolled back last night to 5.2.3.3006. So far, so good.
