Adding disk 3 to Raid 5 on TS-412

Hi guys,

I replaced disk 3 on my (old) TS-412 with a new one (same brand, model and size). After replacing it, the disk is there (see screen print below) but not part of my RAID-5 (which now only consists of disk 1, 2 and 4). All data on my NAS is still available. I already did an ADD DISK and even an EXPAND CAPACITY. One of those actions took me about 20 hours or so. When this action was ready, I restarted the NAS and to my suprise my RAID 5 still consisted of disks 1, 2 and 4. Before replacing disk 3 the RAID 5 consisted of all 4 disks. What can I do to get all four disks in this RAID 5 configuration?

Kind regards,
Peter.

Was a 4 disk RAID before or are you trying to add a 4th disks to a previous 3 disk RAID ?

Whatever you do, I hope your backups are good and current beforehand

It was a 4 disk RAID before replacing bad disk 3…

Replacing a failed disk does not require these actions, which are to add an additional disk to the RAID, or to replace all disks by bigger ones.

From your screenshot, your “3-disks RAID” status is “Ready”, so not Degraded, meaning no failed drive. So it should not be correct.

What is the capacity of each disk? 3 TB ?

Did you replace the drive while the NAS was turned on or off ?

I replaced the disk when the NAS was on. The capacity is 3TB each. My RAID was 4 disks before replacing. Now I have a 3 disk RAID and one separate disk 3 (the replaced one) not being a part of my RAID configuration anymore.

Hello,

can you post a picture from the Volume Management.

Have the new 3 TB HDD the same capacity as the 3 old HDD ?

Yes, they’re all the same size, brand and model. I’ll add a screen print of the Volume Management.

With QTS 5.2.x you can make a “init_lvm.sh”.

But with QTS 4.x i thick you should open a support ticket

16 year old CAT1 devices never had any LVM to init

It’s likely a config issue. You should probably open a ticket and let QNAP support check

Could you please let us know your current firmware version? Also, please open a support ticket and our Support Team will be happy to assist you!

Thanks. I already did this but I’m working on building a new RAID 5 from scratch right now.
