QNAP showcased the AI Agent operating QVR Client at Computex 2026 and QNAP World Tour 2026. After receiving tasks described in natural language, the AI Agent switches cameras, searches recordings, exports clips, and reports results.
Current status: Release Testing. Supported AI Agents include ChatGPT Codex, Claude Code, and Antigravity CLI. Beta version is available—please refer to the last section of this article for application details.
Supported Tasks
| Input | Agent Execution |
|---|---|
| “Switch the Lobby camera to fullscreen.” | Finds the camera by name and loads the feed. |
| “When did Alex appear yesterday afternoon?” | Performs face search in that time frame. |
| “Has the license plate ABC-1234 been captured this week?” | Runs license plate search and compiles the results. |
| “Export the last 5 minutes of the Door camera recording.” | Exports the clip and tracks progress until the file is saved. |
| “Create a rule: Start recording when the Walkway camera detects movement.” | Creates an event rule and confirms it is saved. |
The current version offers 92 automation methods, covering live monitoring, playback, searching, exporting, bookmarks, event rules, scheduling, PTZ, and snapshots. Multi-step tasks are also supported, e.g.: “Find all face matching results for Alex this morning, export 30 seconds before and after each, and organize into a table.”
How It Works
- Discovery. AI Agent queries the running clients via the registered QVR Agent service installed with the client.
- Fetch specs. AI Agent retrieves session rules, method lists, and parameters from the client.
- Execution and verification. AI Agent sends JSON-RPC commands via WebSocket. After every action, it checks client status.
The client provides its own interface documentation, so any AI Agent capable of establishing a WebSocket connection can use it. New methods introduced in future versions are automatically detected—no skill update required.
Setup
- Open Settings > AI Agent Control in QVR Client and enable Accept AI Agent commands. The client will activate a local-only endpoint; disabling this option immediately stops the service.
- Copy the prompt in the Skill Installation section and paste it into your AI Agent’s chat (such as Claude Code). The AI Agent will install the built-in
qvr_ctrlskill in QVR Client.
Setup complete. Recommended first input: “Can you control the QVR Client on my computer?”
Security & Privacy
- Enable control. The service operates only when Accept AI Agent commands is enabled.
- Connection scope. Endpoint only listens on 127.0.0.1 and is not accessible from the network.
- Credential protection. Passwords, PIN codes, and camera credentials are never provided to AI Agent.
- Permission scope. AI Agent operations never exceed the permissions of the currently logged-in account.
- Method labeling. Each method is labeled as read-only or write. You can restrict AI Agent to read-only methods or require approval for every change.
Warning: Data read by the AI Agent—including camera lists, server status, snapshots, and recordings—will be sent to the respective AI provider’s cloud according to its privacy policy. Not recommended for cameras monitoring sensitive areas. Results may vary depending on the AI Agent and model used.
Requirements & Limitations
Requirements: QVR Client Beta for Windows or macOS, and an AI Agent running on the same computer.
Limitations of this Beta:
- Remote control is not supported.
- Some methods are not yet available.
- Logins must be performed manually by the user.
