The Guardian of Family Memories: How My QNAP Survived Six Years and Proved Its Worth

It’s hard to imagine how many memories are stored in a family’s digital archives. Childhood photos, videos from celebrations, valuable documents – all of these create our history, and losing such data can be a real tragedy. Six years ago, understanding this, I purchased a QNAP TS-2 with two 2TB hard drives and set them up in RAID 1 for maximum security.

Years passed, and my QNAP served me faithfully, becoming a kind of digital vault for the entire family. It carefully collected pictures from our travels, recordings of warm gatherings, and the voices of my long-gone relatives. It became an indispensable guardian of our past.

And then, one day, as it often happens, disaster struck unexpectedly – one of the drives failed. This was the moment of truth for the entire system. My heart skipped a beat when I saw the critical alert, but thanks to my decision to use RAID 1, all data remained safe! That was the moment I truly realized that making the right choice once can save invaluable memories.

I replaced the failed drive with a new one, and within a few hours, the array was fully restored – as if nothing had happened. Not a single byte of information was lost.

Today, my QNAP continues to operate just as reliably, safeguarding our family archives. And I am certain of one thing: in today’s world, it’s not just storage devices that matter, but solutions that bring peace of mind. Thank you, QNAP, for being the guardian of my family’s history!

Prior to QNAP we used to backup all our servers & VM’s across multiple USB-c storage devices. Now with 78TB per device it has made the process way less of a headache for me. We now have a 2nd QNAP SAN we keep sync’d to the primary device off-site which was a game changer for our company DR plan. So far in the last year of installing these my time spent of backing up our company data has been cut by easily 1/2. Also the setup & maintenance of these are extremely user friendly. I also ended getting a smaller unit for home to storge all our family photos & documents.

I use my NAS QNAP TS-453D at home to back up three notebooks and four mobile phones. I’ve used the backup once when my phone broke and the repair service returned it to its factory settings. Recently, I ran out of space in OneDrive, and just yesterday I moved some data from the cloud to my NAS. At first, I was hesitant, but I have to admit that QNAP has it well thought out, and everything worked perfectly. The HBS3 program is in my native language, Czech, so it was set up in no time, and then my QNAP transferred the data without any issues from me. Today, I’m planning to try out the automatic organization of downloaded images using AI QuMagie. I’m really looking forward to the results. This brings me back to how much I regret missing the 100GB free QNAP Cloud promotion last year. I wish QNAP would repeat this promotion this year. Please, please…

This year, we’re planning to move into a family house. There, I want to connect security cameras to my NAS and run Home Assistant in a container, and centrally share photos and other data for our family. I’m just wondering if my current home QNAP TS-453D will handle this, or if I should buy a new one for a rack. What do you think? Will my original home NAS suffice, or would you recommend a better model for a rack for my house?

My backup experience with Qnap devices began when I took on a new IT role and was looking for a central backup NAS that could back up a big volume of data in terabytes, do email backups, and perform an automatic backup for client devices using a time machine. After a web search, manual/guide review, and online video evaluation for a NAS that is capable of doing all of these jobs, I came across Qnap NAS and went for the Qnap NAS TS-4U and TS-hx7*-** models. The 4-bay NAS is configured for my file services, time machine backup, and email backup through Qmail (1st year was subscription-free), while the 16-bay NAS was used for large volume rushes backups.
To top all this up, these devices came with a DC (domain controller) that saved me some bulk on another server purchase for a Windows server DC.

I’m still looking forward to stacking up more Qnap servers and further exploring and integrating the other applications on the Qnap devices for our sister company, which is into movie production.

So far, the experience has been blissful…

For years, my digital life turned into an endless collection of files, photos, applications, and anything I could store.
My obsession with saving memories led me to fill drive after drive, spending a fortune on storage. I started with internal hard drives of 240GB and 500GB, then moved on to external USB drives of 1TB, 2TB, 4TB… but it never seemed to be enough.

Then I discovered NAS.
After analyzing the market and studying different options, I decided to invest in a TS-453A with four 6TB drives, configured in RAID 5.
Finally, I had plenty of space for my “digital hoarding” and a media server tailored to my needs.

But soon, I realized I wanted more.
Seeing the versatility of QNAP devices, I purchased a TS-131K, dedicated exclusively to storing surveillance recordings for my home security.
However, something still felt missing…

Over time, I understood that the key wasn’t just storing data but protecting it.
So, I took the next step: I bought a TS-251 with an 18TB drive to perform a daily backup of my other NAS devices.
This unit remained offline, with an IP not connected to the internet, turned off during the day, and only powered on at night for just enough time to complete the backup.

Then, the unexpected happened.
A couple of years ago, I fell victim to a devastating ransomware attack that affected thousands of QNAP users.
My media server, holding over 10TB of data, was completely encrypted.
The snapshots I had were not recent enough to restore everything… but my daily backup saved me.
Thanks to that backup strategy, I was able to recover all my files without losing a single one.

From that day on, I reaffirmed my trust in QNAP.
Investing in a secure storage system has not only been worth it, but it has also given me peace of mind, knowing that my memories and most valuable information are fully protected.

Backup of My Life
Hello. My name is Ivan.
I work in the field of jewelry design and create models for further production.
In 2017, I bought a used NAS with two HDD bays. It came with WD Red 4TB drives with a certain amount of wear. At that time, it was more of an experiment for me—I wanted to understand how convenient it would be to use a NAS in a home network for storing files and streaming movies to different devices.

Over time, my family and I built an entire directory structure on the NAS. It contained temporary files (movies, game installers) as well as valuable archives—photos and videos from weddings, vacations, the birth of children, and other memorable events. Gradually, I also started storing 3D models related to my work there. At some point, I realized that this NAS was not just a storage device but a family treasure holding memories and years of effort.
In early 2022, my family and I had to urgently move to another country. I couldn’t take the NAS with me, but I continued using it remotely. A year later, I noticed that one of the disks in the RAID array was deteriorating due to power outages. I needed to create a backup urgently.
I noticed that the disk was working slower, and the SMART logs showed multiple errors. Fortunately, my friends had physical access to the device and helped me retrieve the drives. However, restoring the data by conventional means was unsuccessful, so I had to turn to a service center. They managed to copy the information to a new drive using a donor HDD. Perhaps, thanks to the fact that I used WD Red drives, the recovery process was fast and successful.
This incident made me seriously reconsider my approach to data storage. In 2023, I decided to upgrade my system and chose a more secure RAID configuration. After researching my options, I realized that RAID 6 with at least four disks was the best choice for my needs, as it allows data recovery even if two drives fail.
After analyzing the market, I chose the QNAP TS-462. I installed reliable WD Gold and WD Ultrastar drives in it. Now, I am confident that my data is safe. Moreover, I expanded my NAS capabilities, using it not only for backups but also to simplify my workflow. Using Hybrid Backup Sync, I synchronized my working folder for online file sharing, set up daily Google Photos backups from the cloud to the NAS, and even deployed a home DNS for secure internet usage using Container Station. I must admit, it took some effort since I am new to this, but now the system runs smoothly and keeps my data protected.
As I wrote this story, I remembered my grandmother. When I was a child, she would open a family photo album, and we would look at pictures together while she told stories about her youth. Back then, photographs were rare, but the stories were priceless.
This experience taught me the importance of preserving memories. Now, I am sure that one day, my children will also gather around, browse through digital albums, and relive the best moments of our lives.
The files on my home NAS are not just photos and documents. They are the backup of my life.

Hi all, I have a TS-1079 Pro, the main configuration is a RAID5 of 7 x 10 terabyte HGST disks + 1 spare.
I have two identical disks individually configured as ‘single static volume’ which I use to synchronise all data in real time with the HBS 3 application.
I also have an external backup every day on 4 Western Digital RED 6TB disks on a second ASUSTORE NAS that I use only for data redundancy.
The backup of the many PCs I use for work (I work as an IT technician) is done locally on each machine but only for OS and programs, I don’t keep data on any computer, they are all connected to the main NAS.
Every three months I copy all my data to small disks (2TB) which I keep as disaster recovery, basically I use three backups with different time frequencies and different types of storage.
The first piece of advice I have for my new customers is to always back up their data, unfortunately there are still many people who do not give this fundamental rule the importance it deserves.
Good life to all.

I have multiple Qnap products mainly NAS solutions. You may will be thinking I am crazy but I have backup on backup and additional backup on already made backup. Does it sound crazy yes maybe but when you loose everything like me in the past and start considering Cloud options as example you will soon realise how these things can be very expensive. I have tried multiple solutions but the best was QNAP purchased my first TS453Be many years back followed with another TS453Be and ending up adding even more. So now I have 4 NAS solutions and looking to consolidate all data and move to ideally one big QNAP NAS in the future. Backup is crucial for me as it contains all my family photos and everything. As I have mentioned before I lost it all already few times and it was nightmare. Qnap offers multiple back solutions on their devices from Hybrid Backup to one touch back up to phone back and cloud backups basically everything what you can think of. My drives are all Western Digital Red Pro or Gold and they never let me down so I will for sure not try to change this. This competition is awesome and it is really nice to see stuff like this. Wishing luck to everyone. Thank you.

It was the frantic call from my business partner that sent a chill down my spine. A critical server had failed, and with it, potentially years of irreplaceable project data. As a small business owner, the thought of losing that information was devastating. We had relied on a patchwork of external drives and cloud storage, which, in that moment of crisis, felt woefully inadequate.

That incident became the catalyst for a significant upgrade in our data protection strategy. After extensive research, I invested in the QNAP TS-873AeU NAS. The short depth rackmount design was perfect for our limited office space, and the specifications were exactly what we needed: a quad-core AMD Ryzen processor for the processing power required for our virtual applications, dual 2.5GbE ports for fast network connectivity, and the peace of mind of PCIe expandability for future upgrades like 10/25GbE or M.2 SSD caching.

Since deploying the TS-873AeU, our data backup has become seamless and reliable. We utilize QNAP’s Hybrid Backup Sync to schedule regular backups of all our critical work documents to the NAS. The speed provided by the dual 2.5GbE ports ensures these backups are completed quickly and efficiently, without impacting our daily workflow. We also leverage the NAS for secure remote access to our files, which has been a game-changer for our team working from different locations.

Just last month, we experienced a minor ransomware scare. Thanks to our robust backup strategy with the QNAP TS-873AeU, we were able to quickly isolate the affected machine and restore the clean data from the NAS within hours, minimizing any disruption to our business operations. The QNAP solution didn’t just save our data; it saved us significant time and potential financial losses.

The QNAP TS-873AeU has become an indispensable part of our business infrastructure, providing us with the security and accessibility we need to operate with confidence. It’s more than just a storage device; it’s a reliable guardian of our most valuable asset – our data.

The old house groaned under the weight of the storm, wind howling like a banshee. Inside, nestled among dusty books and antique furniture, sat my QNAP TS-230. It was a humble two-bay NAS, but to me, it was a fortress. Within its hard drives resided my life’s work – years of research, the novel I was writing, and of course, every digital photograph I’d ever taken.

Tonight, the power flickered, then died. The old house was plunged into darkness, and the wind seemed to laugh outside. My heart hammered against my ribs. Not for the darkness, but for the data. Years of work, all potentially at risk.

I fumbled for my phone, the flashlight beam cutting through the darkness. I made my way to the QNAP, its status lights now dark. I held my breath, waiting for the inevitable. The storm raged on.

Then, the power flickered back on. The QNAP’s lights blinked, then glowed a steady blue. A wave of relief washed over me. I logged into the interface on my laptop, the screen a beacon in the dim light. My files were there, all of them.

I’d set up regular snapshots and off-site backups, a habit born from a past data loss disaster. The QNAP, with its quiet efficiency, had saved me again. It was more than just a storage device; it was my digital guardian. As the storm raged outside, I knew my digital world was safe within the sturdy confines of my little NAS.

A recent addition to my home network is the NAS TS-464eU.
I bought it because I am running out of space and thought that a NAS device would be fun.
Well, I configured my NAS very quickly. Then started to play with it. It turns out it is the swiss army knife of the IT world. Backup is done regularly for my computer. I also do a backup of my Roon Server. It turns out the Roon Server will soon be moved from a Intel NUC to the NAS.
Now I am running a SpeedTest server on my NAS. Now I have a add free network environment with the Pi-Hole application.
There seems to be no end to what this device can do. I love IT.
