well - this is an interesting problem I just discovered. Just built a new TS-h2477AXU-RP. It comes with some form of h5.2.xxx, but I wanted to install h6.0.1.3564 (the latest firmware as of August 2026), so I manually downloaded it from the QNAP Support page, and did the new install, never building the default h5.2.xxx. So it completes the install. I now want to go into Storage Manager to build the storage pools - and it won’t open. I go to the App Center to manually download Storage Manager, and it won’t open anything.
So I say "ok - h6.0.1.3564 has got some issues - I will just do a factory reset (re initialize) to blow away everything, and manually install QuTS h5.2.9.3499, which I know works fine. So I manually download h5.2.9.3499, and do the factory reinitialize - it asks me to install the firmware, so I browse to my download of h5.2.9.3499 - AND IT WONT do the install.
Even with a factory re initialization. Wow. Out of desperation, I re install h6.0.1.3564, and this time, the installation was successful, and everything is working.
But the moral here - is - that if there is a corrupt release of new QNAP firmware, and you have to go backwards - it APPEARS that you can no longer go backwards - even if you do a full factory re initialize.
I don’t think that this is good. Because problems do happen !!!
#1 - I don’t want to contact support for everything.
#2 - when you do the full “factory initialization” - it’s supposed to blow everything away - which I would have assumed - if it shipped with h5.2.xxx, it would have brought it back to h5.2.xxx - but that did not happen. So perhaps Manni_Dat_Mammut is correct - you do the h6.0.1 install, and it burns to the DOM - and even if you do the factory initilization - it doesn’t really do the factory init to the DOM - so you are now stuck in h6.0.1. At this moment - its no big deal - because I did another reinstall with h6.0.1, and this time - it worked. But I don’t need to tell you, that QNAP sometimes writes firmware that is not 100%, and you say “oh - boy, let me back rev, so I can get this system working” - and it appears that once you go to h6.0.1 - there ain’t no going back !!!
With Hero 6 (and QTS 6), you are not able to downgrade the firmware at all. You definitely cannot go back to 5.x. If you want to downgrade a 6.x version to an earlier 6 version you need to contact QNAP support and they can do the downgrade.
@dolbyman is correct. The European Cyber Security Act is forcing this to happen. I really despise how the bureaucrats in the EU pass a law for the EU and it affects everyone else in the world as well.
