Being told there is not enough space when there is plenty of space.

I set my wife up with a share folder on my qnap. She is trying to transfer about 200GB of photos via File Explorer in Win11. Her share is on a 1.5TB thin volume with about 60GB in use and no quotas, so there is plenty of space. File Explorer is saying she is 20GB short on space to make the copy.

What gives? Where else can I troubleshoot? What other info can I provide to better troubleshoot this strange issue?

  • Your Operating System you are using to access your NAS. Win11 via file explorer

  • NAS model: TS-464

  • Firmware Version/Build numbers - QTS 5.2.7.3297

  • Network Setup (ie Single Port or Port Trunking) - single port

  • If Disk related please also specify: N/A - volume related?

  • Drive Configuration: (ie SingleDrive, RAID0, JBOD, RAID1, RAID5, RAID6, RAID10) - 3x 10TB WD Red in RAID 5

  • Number of drives - 3

  • For each drive please provide:

  • Drive Manufacturer (ie Seagate, WD, Hitachi, etc) - WD

  • Drive Model - 10TB Red

So she’s on a thin volume. How much space is being used in total in that storage pool? You can provision thin volumes so that your total space is greater than the physical space in the pool (at least in QTS Hero - I forget if this is the case with QTS). And for that matter, do you have snapshot guaranteed space set? Do you have over-provisioning set? Do you have snapshots that are not allowed to be deleted?

No. Of 11.7 GB in the pool, I have 5.5 GB provisioned over two thin volumes.

I am assuming you mean TB not GB!

What to you have the free space warning level set to?

Haha, yes. Good catch. 5.5 TB of 11.7 TB are provisioned…for the pool.

I am trying to track down what you mean by warning level. I think you mean the alert threshold on the thin volume. That is set to 80%, which I am nowhere near.

Is there any Quota set for the user type that her account is a member of?

Yes, the threshold warning level. If you start getting beyond that in total with your volumes it can cause some havoc.

Do you have other thin volumes provisioned that are getting full? Or do you have plenty of space available overall. Can you send a screenshot of your Storage and Snapshots?

Let us see the volumes you have, etc…
