I have a QNAP TS-h1886XU-RP-R2 NAS that currently runs on QuTS hero (ZFS-based). Can I switch the operating system from QuTS hero to QTS (EXT4-based)?
Yes you can, you need to erase all internal drives (HDD,SSD,NVMe) and then when you do the re-setup chose QTS instead of QuTS
What is the reason you want to move back to QTS? I find things in Hero to be quite wonderful.
This is a detailed comparison between the two options.

Although, I must admit, having read it twice, there’s still some bits I don’t understand!
What don’t you understand? I can try to help answer.
That’s okay thanks, I understand all I need to , for my usecase
Suit yourself. I’m more than happy to help you figure out what you need.
Most people may not need Hero. The biggest advantage to Hero is WORM where you can set up folders in which a file can’t be changed once it is written. That can be set as a “forever” setting or a period of time.
RAID rebuilds are also faster under Hero. And shared folders are quite a bit different in how you set them up and how the system sees them.
But if you are good, that’s fine. ![]()
