Connecting a remote Hikvision IP camera to a QNAP TS-264

I’m new to this topic, I was able to connect the camera locally, but the idea is for it to be a camera in a remote location, on another network. I would like some guidance on whether it can be done through a QNAP DDNS or how the camera video could be recorded on the NAS.

So you want the camera in one location and the NAS in another? The best and most secure way to do that is to create a VPN between the remote location and your local network. Then you can access the camera in QVR Surveillance quite easily.

NA9D, I did the same thing, but I couldn’t get the cameras to connect with QVR Surveillance; I think I’m missing a step—they never connected.

Oooh…

It’s possible that the cameras are using UDP connections for some or all of the traffic. Not sure what Hikvision uses. UDP traffic does not go over VPN connections very easily. It’s somewhat of a pain in the backside to set up.

Need to make sure the cameras use TCP connections only over a VPN.

There is a way to make a remote network look entirely like your local network with all traffic (including UDP passing) using ZeroTier. But the free version of ZeroTier has gotten extremely slow and you also have to have the right kind of router that supports it.

I have over 20 Hikvision cameras, The last 5 we bought, I have been unable to connect remotely. I think it is a security measure. You might look in a Hikvision forum fora setting.

But if you are on a VPN, then you technically aren’t remote.

I bet they have some UDP traffic exchanged which is not crossing into the VPN.

Technically, you’re then only virtually local.
