Constant HDD Access

Hello, This seems to be a common complaint, and the answer seems to be “that’s just the way it is”

But I would think for my simple application, it wouldn’t be that way.

2x SSD Crucial CT2000P310SSD8 1.82 TB (2 TB)

HDD 1 Seagate ST16000NT001-3LV101 14.55 TB (16 TB) 19 days 12hrs

HDD 2 Seagate ST16000NM000J-2TW103 14.55 TB (16 TB) 17 days 17 hours

HDD 3 Seagate ST4000VN008-2DR166 3.64 TB (4 TB) 44 days 18 hours

HDD 4 (Empty)

System Volume (thin) was set up with only the 2 SSD installed Raid 1

Data Vol 1 (thick) added after system set up.

Disc 2, and 3 are free and not part of a pool yet

Only used internally (no Port forwarding on router)

Accessed by Samsung Smart TV (Plex), and Win 11 PC

Plex Version 4.147.1 Remote access disabled

I am not sure why the HDD are always banging, even when TV off, and PC not connected (Via Qfinderpro)

Showing 0 background tasks

Manarequest.cgi is only thing in resource manager running, with sometimes disc_manage running, and sometime both showing as zombie(?)

Zombie list has anywhere from 6-20 entries constantly changing

Anti virus and malware rune once per day, about 45 seconds to run

SMART polling time maxed to 60

Tried enabling/disabling stand by mode.

Now have it set to start at 12:00, and shut down at 03:00

I have tried searching this group and Others Links such as this

New Nas - wont spindown - QNAP NAS Community Forum

https://forum.qnap.com/viewtopic.php?f=55&t=155665&

give me:

Forbidden You don’t have permission to access this resource.

Only real data on the server right now is the Plex Media, 5.68 TB

I haven’t tried to set up back ups yet.

As long as I can keep the Plex data on HDD 1, I am not against a total rebuild.

Any suggestions other that Move it to another Room?

Is it true that stopping it every night may be putting more strain on the HDDS?

I didn’t think it could since it is accessing all of the time.

Thanks In advance.

Discussed many times, the QTS OS partitions are replicated across all internal disks

Your only chance is to manually kick them out

Thanks for the reply

I have done may searches, and never found thi link.

Thank you for your help and patience.

I really though putting the OS on the ssd would avoid this issue

I am obviously a novice on the qnaö architecture, but serviceable on PC builds.

But you didn’t , you put the system volume on SSD, not the OS

Thanks again for your patience

I thought setting it up with only the ssd in raid 1 would mean I would have the sys and OS on the SSDs.

I obviously have a ton to lean.

If you really want to avoid the constant HDD access check the link I posted, it has it’s risks, but up to you if you want to apply it to our setup.

Cheers to Germany btw. (I was born in Duesseldorf and moved to Vancouver in 2009), if you want, you can also open a German topic if that works better for you.

Thanks,

I live in Düsseldorf now, but am an expat. My German is definitely not good enough for technical discussions

(F‘95 Mitglied) live in Altstadt.

I got a couple of schoolmates that post F95 stuff on facebook all the time, I am no soccer fan so. that’s that.

But we can certainly stay here, if German is not your language, no problem.

Btw did you check that your exos is not a re-manufactured chia coin ‘fake’ ? (Germany is sort of the epicenter of the scandal)
