Hi,
I do have a broken TS-431X, which don’t turn on anymore. Networking lights shows activity, but unfortunately, the system won’t start. I had managed to get a technican, who was able to replace the loadswitch S8940. Unfortunately without success.
I have purchased an TBS-464 and an external TR-004.
Now my question. Will the TBS-464 recognize the Raid-5 configured volume, that was running on TS-431X? I have some concerns regarding the stored data, when connecting these disks to the new NAS. Is there a way, to recover the data, in a “read-only” mounting way?
Thanks in advance for advise.
Regards from germany.
Tobias
As the TBS-464 only takes NVMe storage and the TS-431X takes 3.5" inch disks, the task will fail at the pure physical dimensions.
You need to get a NAS that will turn green here
Thanks dolbyman,
that is correct. Rearding the disks, I have purchased an TR-004, which is shown as compatible expansion enclosure. That enclosure can handle 4 x 3.5" SATA disks.
Thank you for taking care of my problem.

The TR-004 would erase the disks and all data and OS on them.
So, that plan would not work and end it data catastrophe (unless you have backups … always have backups)
Tobias

Hi Dolbyman,
That’s absolutely correct. The backup ran on Saturday, and the failure occurred on Thursday. Unfortunately, the data from Sunday is naturally not included in the backup. The hard drives are fine, so the question is how the data could be accessed again. The last option would be to get a used 431X.
Hence the question: would that have worked with the TR-004?
Best regards,
Tobias
Sorry … should have never switched to German. (English forum)
But you sadly got the wrong devices (hence my links to the migration compatibility checker)
If you had gotten a x86/ARM NAS that checks as compatible in the above tool, then you could do the migration.
The TR is a DAS and if you set it to any RAID mode it will kill the content of the disks, in JBOD/port multiplier mode it will leave the disks alone, but the QNAP cannot boot the OS from an external DAS (yes the OS is on the disks) or assemble the RAID from it.
Hi Dolbyman,
thanks for translation and clarification. I do run external backups to a LTO4 drive, this is attached to a computer. This is only performed on Saturday.
So I will try to get another repair, to get the 431X running. Else, I will try to purchase an used one.
Thank you.

PS: I have purchased 4 NVMe sticks, to run the TBS-464. The TR-004 had been an option, to recover, if it would have been possible,
I get what you were thinking in your purchase, but it’s sadly not possible that way.
But to reiterate, you do not have to get the exact same NAS, any NAS that would show up as compatible, would work. (in case you get another compatible unit cheaper)
