Disk in RO mode with SMART errors Encrypted Share Locked

Hello everyone,

I need help with my QNAP TS-451+. One of my disks shows SMART errors, and the volume is now in read-only mode. Unfortunately, I have an encrypted shared folder on this volume that is currently locked, and I can’t unlock it because QTS refuses due to the RO state.

Before replacing the failing disk, I want to back up the encrypted data safely. My goal is to locate where QNAP stores the contents of a locked encrypted share so I can copy them to another drive and decrypt them later (I have the encryption password).

Does anyone know:

  1. Where exactly the encrypted data of a locked share is stored on the volume (path)?
  2. Is it safe to copy that folder as-is for later decryption on Linux using eCryptFS tools?
  3. Any other safe method to recover this encrypted share before the disk completely fails?

Thanks in advance for any advice!

You either have no redundancy in your RAID (spanning JBOD/RAID0) or more disks than your redundancy allows are problematic, otherwise your NAS would not be in read-only mode

Backup are done BEFORE you have an issue, not just after stuff hits the fan.
