DOM not working on HS-453DX-8G

Hi,

After a power failure my HS-453DX-8G is no longer working: I am able to boot into BIOS, but only the UEFI shell is available (having already taken my drives out).

I’ve followed the firmware recovery guide which says the DOM should be /dev/mmcblk0, but this device is not available when I boot or to fdisk.

On one of many reboots QNAP OS showed up as a boot option and it did boot up, but as there were no disks inserted it wouldn’t start. I’ve rebooted another 20+ times, but I’m not getting the DOM boot option again.

It seems the DOM for HS-453DX is soldered on and I’m not sure it can be replaced?

I tried flashing the DOM image to a USB stick and boot from it. It’s slow, but boots to a terminal login screen. Unfortunately the NAS doesn’t to get an IP address from the router, I can’t find it with Qfinder nor check the web gui.

Do you know if the DOM replacable on the HS-453DX? Or have any hints as to how I can get it working off the external USB stick?

Thanks.

I do not see a USB DOM or header here

check this guide though

This unit uses an eMMC as a DOM.

However, you can still boot it from a USB stick to rewrite the eMMC.

Thanks for your replies.

The DOM eMMC is here:

I’ve tried booting from a Clonezilla USB stick to rewrite the eMMC DOM, but the eMMC does not show up as a device in BIOS or as /dev/mmcblk0 to Clonezilla/Debian, so there’s nothing to write the dom.img to.

This is why I “replaced” the eMMC with an external USB stick. When the NAS boots from the external USB stick I would expect it to acquire an IP address and show up in Qfinder, but it doesn’t, so I can’t update firmware as described in the firmware recovery guide.
