Encrypted shared folder cannot be unlocked on QNAP NAS

Hello everyone,

I have a QNAP NAS with an encrypted shared folder named “Private” that I cannot unlock.

Folder details:

  • Encrypted folder: /share/CACHEDEV1_DATA/.__eN__Private
  • Digest folder: /share/CACHEDEV1_DATA/.__eN___qnap_digest
  • GUI does not show unlock option
  • SSH shows the encrypted folder contents but the NAS does not have the eCryptFS module
  • I suspect the issue may have occurred after a power loss
  • I do not have snapshots for this folder

I have already opened a ticket with QNAP Support..

Thank you for any advice!

Hope you have backups…snapshots do not replace backups (as they would be destroyed on storage failure as well)

I’m a little confused as folders beginning with a . are hidden and considered OS folders or similar.

If you have a folder named Private it should be located at /share/CACHEDEV1_DATA/Private

I have never used encrypted folders, but my guess was, that they are hidden until they get decrypted and then a visible mount is created

No. I have an encrypted folder. It’s there. You just can’t access it w/o the key.

Could you please clarify the exact situation when you say you are unable to unlock it? Was this NAS originally managed by someone else? Thank you!

When I log in to my QNAP, I previously had a folder with a padlock icon next to it. I could click the padlock, enter the password, and the folder would unlock and the data inside was visible.

Now, when I click on that folder, I get the system message: “This file or folder does not exist.”
The folder appears to be unlocked, but it only shows the folder name and the size is 0 MB.

I suspect the folder may have remained unlocked during a power loss, and after that event the data is no longer visible.

Can you go into an SSH shell and “look” for the folder? It should not have a “.” preceding it.

If you are running QTS and have one storage group, then it should be in /share/CACHEDEV1_DATA/

Please open a support ticket for us, and our Support Team will assist you with the follow-up process. Thank you!

Using SSH, I found the directory:

/share/CACHEDEV1_DATA/.@__lock__Private/

OK. Good. I just created an encrypted folder of my own on my QTS NAS. The folder certainly does get hidden when locked.

It appears though that there are multiple folders being used. I put a small text file in my encrypted folder. After locking, it does not show up in the .@_lock folder. But there is stuff in the ._EN folder.

The data appears to be stored in the ._EN folder. But at this point, I think you are going to have to work with QNAP.
