Today I found my TS-653B NAS unresponsive. Single red flashing status light. No change after powering off and on. No fan activity, no status on the LCD.
I’ve tried removing all the drives, and, then also removing the RAM, no change.
This is probably obvious but with a RAID 6 setup there isn’t going to be an easy way to get the data off the disks without buying another NAS, is there?
I do have backups for at least 97% of the data, and I can re-download the rest. I even tested them! It would just be faster to start from the local copy.
Has anyone ever written a guide of how to do it? Not that I have a 4 disk enclosure just sitting around or anything but I’m curious.
Possibly, but possibly not. It depends on what format your current backup is. It isn’t a simple process to mount all the drives, and you have to have a system to mount them in. Maybe you do. Then, once you’ve downloaded and configured everything under a Linux distro, you still have to transfer everything.
If your backup is a local external disk, then I would argue that a straight up rebuild and restore is easier and faster.
Thanks to both of you. That’s an interesting read on what’s involved in recovering from the drives in the NAS.
FWIW I had the NAS backed up to the BackBlaze cloud (b2) with client side encryption enabled. I have downloaded all the data and verified I can decrypt it with QNAPs QENC Decryptor utility on my machine. I do have a partial local backup but its aged.
Mostly leaving this here as breadcrumbs for anyone with similar issues in the future.
