A friend gave me a TS-231P (I don’t think he ever used it ).
I installed two used Seagate 4 TB drives, set it up as RAID1, and updated the OS. It seems like my hard drives are running all the time despite setting the device to spin down after 30 minutes.
This is my first experience with QNAP (wanted to try something other than Synology especially since the device was free .
Am I missing something, or is this ‘the nature of the beast?’ I don’t remember the Synology NAS doing the same thing.
Well, if you set the drives up and just did this, it is going to take them some time to sync the RAID and do all the initial stuff the QNAP does. There’s a lot of people who ask about spinning the drives down. I never do it (I just let the NAS run).
I’ll let someone else chime in but you may just need to let it go through all the stuff the NAS does at first and let it settle down. Then it should start following the sleep schedule.
Common topic that has been an issue for years. There are many existing threads on this.
The operating system writes the logs to the drive and there are many other functions that keep the drives active. There is little hope to get them to sleep on their own, even with a multidrive, multivolume setup.
Use the scheduler to power up / down the unit, or turn it on manually based on your usage, but don’t expect the drives to power up / down on their own.
If this query is based on wear and tear, then drives are designed to run for years (and particularly NAS rated drives) and always keep a backup of your data.
If this query is based on noise, then locate the NAS where you won’t hear the fan or drives (ensure proper ventilation and set the fan speed to “auto”).
Your (unspecified) firmware version and unknown running apps and system configuration will have some impact on all this as well.
