HBS3 is filling up my disk with cruft

I only use HBS3 to copy files to an external HDD using the sync function. This has worked well for many years. Recently, I have noticed that the system partition (DataVol1) of my TS-473A (running QTS 5.2.3) has run out of free space. This is strange because all my data resides on another partition (DataVol2).

The attached screenshot show that HBS is generating some very large data files (>1GB each). The first of these files is dated 2021, but they were only 244MB each. They have been growing in size over the years and have now almost completely filled up my system partition. The timestamp on these files is the same as the time that the sync function runs, so they are clearly related to it.

Is there any way to stop HBS from doing this? I have not yet attempted to simply delete these files, but I assume it is safe to do so. Google suggests I decrease the retention settings in HBS3, but I have not been able to locate any retention setting in HBS3. TIA!
