If you’re running Nx Witness on QNAP Virtualization Station with an existing activated license, please postpone upgrading to 4.2.0.281 for now. The upgrade may cause Nx Witness to detect a hardware change and mark your license as invalid.
Starting with Virtualization Station 4.2.0, both new and existing VMs receive a VM serial number through the biosID field, which was previously empty. This was added to improve compatibility with applications that require a non-empty BIOS identifier.
Nx Witness uses biosID alongside other hardware identifiers to calculate its Hardware ID. Changing this field from empty to a value changes that ID even though you’re still running the same VM.
This affects licenses activated “before” the QVM upgrade. If you activate Nx Witness after the VM is already running on 4.2.0, this specific issue does not apply, and you can keep the assigned biosID.
If you’ve already upgraded and your license has become invalid, please contact us. We’ve confirmed with Nx that restoring biosID to its original empty state resolves this specific issue. We’re working on the correction process and will update this post when instructions are available.
Sorry for the disruption, and we will provide hotfix soon.
