Help needed (2 x RMA) TS-464eU - PWR-PSU-100W-DT01 defective power supply?

Dear community members,

I bought the TS-464eU model and after two days of use it went to the service center in Germany (first RMA) due to an electric shock while installing RAM sticks.

As I measured with a multimeter, the two larger heatsinks, the transformer, and the large capacitor of the PWR-PSU-100W-DT01 power supply measure around 122V when the server is plugged in, but also when it is running. The high voltage doesn’t go away until a few seconds after unplugging the power cord, and that’s when it hits me while installing RAM. Additionally, the power supply emits an audible buzzing/chirping noise that is particularly audible when the power cord is plugged in and the top cover is removed - server is not started.
The same power supply can be found in the following models: TS-431XeU, TL-R400S, TS-435XeU, TS-451DeU, TS-464eU.

The server returned from the service center after two weeks, and the power supply itself was replaced with a new one - new serial numbers on the components and no red spots on the PSU board near the power supply mounting screws. Strangely, the service center claims the power supply was not replaced. Why are they lying when I have pictures of the original power supply?

As it turned out after connecting the NAS to the powery, the new power supply also hums/chirps slightly and there is 122V again on the two heat sinks, the transformer and the large capacitor.

QNAP called my NAS again for a second RMA to replace the power supply again.

Has anyone from the community experienced such case or could measure your power supply whether there is 120V on the above components?

I would be very grateful because the replaced power supply has the same symptoms and I don’t know if this is its normal operating conditionor this is problem that occurs on a larger scale.

I’ve not heard of this issue before but it sounds like a faulty PSU or components are being supplied to QNAP or a fault in manufacturing.

I would have though you would have been given a new NAS after 2 days of owning it, or at least take it back to your supplier and demand your money back under consumer rights.

The fact a second power supply still shows the issue means with the PSUs are faulty OR a short on the motherboard/casing is live. either way this is dangerous and should be reported to QNAP again along with your supplier.

I hope someone from QNAP can contact you regarding this issue and resolve it ASAP.

For sure, after 2 days I would have returned it to the POS and not RMA’ed it. (Unless the ‘electric shock’ was determined to an ESD event caused by improper user grounding.)
According to German consumer law you can reverse your purchase after 3 repair attempts though (you need to contact your POS for that)
