I have 3 SMB shares - MULTIMEDIA, MY DATA and DOWNLOADS and since the weekend the NAS appears to be deleting all files and folders from my shares - luckily I can restore the lost files from each Recycle Bin but it keeps happening.
I restored from recycle bin at the weekend and it’s all happened again within 3 days.
Complete N00b. I don’t have snapshots enabled. And have no idea where to even begin.
I don’t have any NAS sync or remote access enabled.
The recycle bin (actually Network Recycle Bin) is where shared files are put when a client deletes them.
How many clients on your LAN have read-write access to the NAS shares?
If many, shut them all down, and only allow one client device at a time to connect to the NAS. Monitor your files for 24 hours (or however long it usually takes for the files to be deleted). If none are deleted, repeat with the next device.
Hopefully, you’re not exposing any NAS services to the Internet.
Is there anything in the Network Recycle Bin to show when files were deleted? I’ve not looked at it for many years, so I don’t recall what information it makes available to the user.
If you can see deletion datetimes, that might help find the culprit.
I’ve sat at my screen and watched the files/folders disappear and no one else is on the computer. AppleTVs are all off. The Mac are all pretty standard apart from an app I use called Mountmate to help map drives.
Are you using Qsync? And are you syncing with a cloud service? If so, this is what can happen. I’ve seen it happen myself. You can’t use Qsync to sync a cloud service like iCloud or OneDrive to the QNAP.
So for example, if your documents folder or your desktop folder are sync’d to your iCloud account and then you also try to sync them to your NAS, bad things can happen. I had a situation with my OneDrive account for the job I had before I retired. I had videos from Teams calls that kept getting deleted. It was Qsync and after a ticket and discussion with QNAP, they were like, “Yeah, you can’t use Qsync with cloud services.” I think they have an app note on this as well…
