Help with SSDs in Warning status

Hi folks, long time lurker first time poster… QNAP TS-1273U-RP and QTS 5.0.1.2194

I recently inherited a QNAP and I have a Raid 5 group of 5 disks (5TB total and 2TB each disk), 3 of which are SSDs in Warning status (zero life left). There is no cache drive assigned. There is data on the RAID. We have backups.

Looking through the documentation, can I just pull a single drive, wait for the beep, slam in a replacement and let it rebuild? Do I need to detach, pull, reattach, rebuild first? My MSP is telling me the 2nd option is the correct one.

If I could have a second opinion that would be great.

Thank you kindly,

Chris

AFAIK, for RAID 5 you pull a bad drive and put in a new one - hot swap. Don’t do it when the system is shut down.

Now, the challenge you have is that 3 of your drives are out of life. If another drive dies completely while doing your rebuild your entire RAID will be gone.

Thank you, I understand that piece. I can pull the drive even in warning? I have only pulled drives in failed.

Yes, you can pull any single drive you want (as long as no other drive has failed)

Roger - I am going to give it a go after hours. Locate the first disk, pull it out and wait for beeps before putting in the new SSD. Once completed I will move on to the next one…

Thanks everyone.

Just to add, there is no hot spare. If we were to detach the drive per the MSP, then attach the replacement drive, does it do the same thing? Or is this not supported?

Hotspare would kick in on failure, in your case rebuild will kick in on replacement (when you put a new drive in)

Friends, I wanted to update. 1st SSD has been replaced no issues. We are performing another backup and going to do the next this evening.
