How do I correctly replace the system drive?

Good day everyone.

I apologize in advance if this topic has already been discussed - unfortunately, I was not able to find anything.

Could you please tell me how to correctly replace the system disk (the one marked as “System”)? I would like to replace this disk with one of a larger capacity, and I want to make sure that I don’t lose any data stored on the other disks. RAID is not configured - each drive is working as an individual volume. The device is a QNAP TS-473A running QTS 5.2.7.3297.

Thank you in advance!

You just replace it ..you need to reinstall all apps after (and whatever data was on that drive of course)

Make sure your backups are good and current before you do anything

You probably won’t be able to keep the same configuration, but you can do as below:

  • copy data to another volume
  • remove the System volume (from storage & snapshot)
  • reboot the NAS → the System volume will move to another volume (it’s only a “label” and the default location for apps)
  • reinstall apps
  • insert a new drive and recreate a volume on it.
