How do I upgrade to QuTS Hero my TS264

My old TS251+ failed and I just got a new TS264. It is running with QTS5.2.5

You cannot upgrade, you would need to erase both drives and start from scratch with QuTS during setup.

Hello,

you can read this

Thank you… as I rebooted with the old disks installed already I have QTS and all is running. So I should do backups of what I need from the HDDs and format them both - assume after getting the new NAS running in QuTS Hero. For this - I am planning to get 2 SSDs 2 TB - I understand I can then reboot only with them and set all up there - then add the old HDDs and format with Hero? am I in the right track? will the system guide me to format the SSDs the right way? can I have the system and also use them for cache?

Cheers - I was hoping to do the reverse - as my old qnap was dead I started the 265 with them - was unaware I could not upgrade the OS. In the features page it states: “The TS-264 uses the QTS operating system by default. You will be able to switch to using the QuTS hero operating system. QuTS hero provides benefits such as ZFS data integrity and WORM technology to prevent data tampering. (Switching to QuTS hero is supported starting from QTS 5.2.1.)”

You can switch to QuTS Hero, but it’s not just an “upgrade.” The entire system has to be redone. You would need to backup all your data. Then reinitialize the system. In web setup you would choose to change to QuTS Hero.

I’m not entirely sure what Hero buys you with a 2 drive NAS. Unless you want WORM capability, you really won’t see much benefit upgrading to hero. It’s really meant for larger RAID systems.

Other things are more confusing such as when you create a shared folder, Hero treats it like it’s a new shared volume. Shared folders are much different than QTS.

Like I said, unless you need/want WORM, I would stay with QTS for your NAS.

Here’s some information about QTS and QuTS hero for your reference. Hope it helps!
