I have a macbook air sequoia 15.5 , 16GB memory, 1TB internal drive. I would like my new NAS to be a Time Machine backup and a storage area for network file access. My NAS is a QNAP TS-264. this is mt first nas. How do I get access and start using the device?
I don’t have any apple devices, so I have no experience with it, but google spat out this guide:
I’m a Mac guy and use Time Machines to back up 3 different Macs. There’s a couple ways to do it:
1.) When setting up a shared folder, you can set that shared folder to be a TimeMachine backup location.
2.) In Hybrid Backup Sync you can set up TimeMachine Backups. This basically does the same thing as number one above as you have to specify a shared folder, but what it does specifically do is cause the NAS to advertise as a TimeMachine backup location.
Just make sure to set things up in a RAID5 configuration for your drives. Then plan on backing your TimeMachine backups.
I installed Hybrid Backup Sync and just followed the steps. All’s good now. Thanks
Steve
Thanks for your research. I’m up and working.
Old user of ST-459 (2009?) currently on 4.2.6 the last supported level. Any ideas on conversion from AFP to SMB requirement for next Mac OS level?
Surely this is optional and up to the user, and not a requirement for timemachine or anything else?
I’m not saying it is or isn’t a good or bad idea, just not really part of the answer.
Not a requirement for Time Machine per se, but consider it a “best practice” to implement. At the very least a RAID1 setup.
I setup a time machine share with a specific size but eventually TM fills that and then I have to go manually delete backups or reset the share and reinitialize the TM.
Is there another way to do this that TM automatically cleans space or another method?
TimeMachine should remove backups from the drive when it runs out of space. You should not need to worry about it…
