The old forum is sadly now completely offline, so keeping this topic alive won’t make much sense.
So are you saying that in the end I was wrong asking this in the first post, since we went from a partially accessible old forum to a forum that is not accessible anymore? 
You were absolutely right asking that in the first place, what QNAP should have done is open up all subforums to the public without login, instead they closed the whole thing down.
I don’t understand why running a read only phpbb was not achievable anymore.

I was considering another QNAP, but wonder why the content of the forum had to be hidden?
Seeking the need to begin anew and with such a wealth of user based information discarded, I wonder what’s the “real” reason QNAP decided to ditch the content of forum’s database?
The old forum was constantly failing and was super slow.
I don’t know if it was still under attack (?) the whole time or the amount of data made queries run too long (no idea what phpbb’s maximum db size is/was) but it was more offline than online the last few months of it’s existence.
But…couldn’t the database content have been saved and presented as read-only? Logic suggests that topics could have been searched and viewed accordingly. When changing horses in mid-stream (so to speak) other forums that I’ve frequented in the past have done this and the assumption is that their administrators were =< the tech/IT capabilities that QNAP has access to.
I wish I could at least recover all my posts in the TVHeadend subforum, because there was a lot of useful information that is now lost forever.
The wayback machine doesn’t help… if QNAP had been clearer before closing the forum I would have saved them but they just said the old forum would be available in read-only mode, which is fine for me.
But it hasn’t been like so: if you can’t access the non-public posts (i.e. posts that are protected by a login) and also you can’t search, well, it’s not useful at all. Having known that beforehand, the topics could have been saved with other methods.

He did full backup of all user accessible forum data.(around 3GB) Maybe we could ask him for the dump to host it somewhere ?
It could be certainly be useful, especially if user accessible means a logged user.

3 GB is very small, I thought the size would be much higher!
Unfortunately his backup wasn’t complete and so it’s not usable at all.
