Hyper Data Protection Retention Issue

I’m using Hyper Data Protector to back up two Hyper-V guest machines. The backups are completing successfully, my issue is with the retention settings.

Retention “Smart Versioning” is enabled. It should keep:

  • 7 daily
  • 4 weekly
  • 12 monthly
  • Number of versions to retain before applying the above settings = 10

From reading through the documentation, it should take 10 daily backups before applying retention settings to adhere to the daily/weekly/monthly requirements.

What’s really happening though is that the backup system never has more than 10 restore points available.

The NAS has 82% free space remaining.

What might be going on?

So what are you using to do the backups? Are these backups or snapshots? How much space is available in your particular storage pool? What’s the total space available on the NAS?

It’s a backup rather than a snapshot. The storage pool has 9 TB free and 1.91 TB in use.
I was just chatting with my lead tech about the issue as he had been looking into this off and on for a few months. As luck would have it, very recently there was an update to HDP and he was holding off, thinking that the issue may be resolved now.

It will run again tonight. If we end up with 11 restoration points rather than the current 10, that will be a good sign.

Hello,

You are talking about Smart Versioning Function in HDP for PC/VM.

I’d like to know more details about your backup job:

  • When did you start your backup job?
  • How often do you execute? Once a day? Once a week? or …

You can find more details about our smart versioning mechanism: https://www.qnap.com/en/how-to/faq/article/how-does-smart-versioning-work-in-hbs-or-hdp-for-pc-vm
