Hyper Data Protector - Temporary Backup Drive - NTFS/ReFS

When adding a QNAP NAS for immutable backups using its proprietary Hyper Data Protector application, does it not allow you to select ReFS-formatted drives as temporary drives when creating the backup job… (waiting I+D)

On the other hand, I can’t find anything in the documentation about how much temporary space is required; in other backup software, it’s usually 2-5% of the size of the resources to be backed up. Any suggestions?

Because there is no implementation of refs in QTS…I think in all of Linuxworld there is only commercial drivers for it.

Format the drive in NTFS OR exFAT instead

Windows 11 will likely allow ReFS booting… if it makes it out of beta…

And some drivers with full access:

As said…only commercial drivers available

And what does a windows boot option have to do with QNAPs ability to read this format?

While ReFS was previously only available as a file storage partition, changing the boot partition from NTFS to ReFS is also possible later. Furthermore, (presumably, after so many years) the ReFS format can be used from the very beginning for Windows installations. This is important if you have agents and operating systems to back up from QNAP apps.

Regarding drivers and proprietary software, QNAP does not release its applications either, but it is present in personal and business environments where it is necessary to access data in ReFS.

No idea what you are trying to say.

If you want QNAP to offer a commercial implementation of a reFS filesystem driver, open a ticket. They offered a “for pay” exFAT driver before native support was added via a kernel update.

Lamenting about it here does nothing

I’ve opened a support case and it’s been sent to R&D, which doesn’t mean it’s on the development roadmap.

I’m opening this thread here to find out if more people have encountered these issues in business environments with Windows Server and, in the future, on personal systems…

The other initial question is also not documented by QNAP, there is also another ticket about it and they are going to add it: “how much temporary space is required; in other backup software, it’s usually 2-5% of the size of the resources to be backed up”
