I want to watch home videos on my smart tv.

I’ve created a share where I have my home movies stored. I want to watch them on my Smart TV, but am struggling with Plex.

I have a ts-443, firmware is: 5.2.9.3451.

I cannot figure out how to tell Plex where the movies are so I can index them. I’ve run Plex from a PC in the past, but I now have around 300 GB worth and I don’t have the room on my PC. I also use the NAS for PC and server backups so Plex on the NAS is the obvious choice.

Like I’ve said in the past, after living for 82 years, I don’t track manuals too well anymore. Would someone share some easy to understand instructions on how to set that up?

Seriously, talk to me like a 10 year old! Just don’t treat me like one.

Probably a TS-433 ..a pretty bad NAS for Plex.

Best and easiest would be a android stick with kodi and plain SMB playback

Well, I joined it to my domain thinking that’d be the easiest/best way to ensure drives were mapped. I was able to share the folders I wanted and map them from both Windows 11 and server 2022.

Started to make a backup of my PC, and 45 minutes in, it failed. The drive lost its connection giving me the dreaded red X. I checked the server and those mapped drives weren’t working either.

I rebooted the NAS and both PC’s and was able to map the drives on my Windows 11, but when attempting to access the NAS from my server I got an error telling me I don’t have permissions.

At my age, I don’t feel like I have the time, nor the inclination to be patient. This will be the 3rd NAS I’ve sent back.

Since I can run Plex, Twonky or Jellyfish on the server, I’m just going to get a PCIE Raid card to stick in the server and get a ventilated drive case. I had that before and it worked fine for several years, then the card went bad. It was a cheap card, so this time I’ll get a better card.

Thanks for your support though!

That is getting a bit fractured..a domain can do great things for you for user/rights/device management, most of the time overkill at home.

You can map shares without a domain

This ARM NAS is pretty bad for plex (weak CPU and no GPU support)… So my advice with simple SMB streaming to a simple KODI client stands

Hi @PalyWalnuts ,

Thank you for sharing the details.

For your case, the simplest way is to first check where your home videos are stored on the NAS. For example, they may be in a shared folder such as Multimedia, Videos, or another folder you created.

When setting up Plex, please try to add that shared folder as your Plex video library:

  1. Open Plex Media Server.

  2. Add a new library.

  3. Choose “Other Videos” or “Movies”.

  4. Select the shared folder where your videos are stored.

  5. Let Plex scan the folder.

If Plex does not show the folder clearly, it may appear under a NAS path such as /share/Multimedia or /share/Videos.

Since you also mentioned Windows mapped drive, domain permission, and backup issues, those may be separate from the Plex setup. If the folder cannot be accessed reliably, we recommend opening a support ticket so our support team can help review the actual NAS settings with you.

Thank you again for your patience.

Hello,

Not sure that it’s possible with TS443 because of it’s ARM processor but if you have the availabity to use container you can easaly deploy a JellyFin server in a container less than 10 min to deploy it with Multimedia folder. After that (with little configuration regarding port translation that is not very perfect on QTS Docker implementation) you can use JellyFin client on your smart TV, your Laptop, your mobile device. The app is free (Server side and client side). Honestly i longer hesitated between Plex and JellyFin but for me now Plex required to pay if you want some advance functionality which is not the case with JellyFin. Otherwise like previously said just take a stick where you can install Kodi and let’s go.
