Introducing QSurfer and QIndexer: open-source search tools for NAS file storage

this is finally mature enough that I figured I would post it here

Introducing QSurfer and QIndexer: open-source search tools for NAS file storage

QSurfer is an open-source desktop search and browse client for QNAP Qsirch, built to provide a faster, more practical desktop experience for shared-file search. without gigabytes of bloated python and java. the app is cross platform and written in .NET/Avalonia

It works with Qsirch through its REST API and presents results in a familiar file-manager style interface: search, browse, preview, open, organize, recover, and keep multiple searches active at once.

QSurfer can use:

  • Qsirch / QSIRC for existing QNAP-indexed search.
  • QIndexer, an optional open-source companion indexing service that can run alongside

QIndexer is intended for environments that want more control over indexing, including non-QNAP storage or a supplementary index for local/network paths. QSurfer can query both configured providers and present the results through the same interface.

Highlights:

  • Search files and folders by name, type, dates, exact match, document contents, and Boolean terms.
  • Explorer-style browsing with mapped-drive, UNC, and Linux mount path support.
  • Folder-scoped search: include multiple folders or explicitly exclude areas of a share.
  • Saved searches, recent searches, favorites, tabs, and detachable windows.
  • Details, list, and icon views with sorting and progressive loading.
  • File previews for common documents, PDFs, and images.
  • NAS Recycle Bin and snapshot/version-history support where exposed by the NAS.
  • Per-user local settings, history, favorites, saved searches, and layout.
  • Portable self-contained Windows x64 and Linux x64 builds.

QSurfer. is not affiliated with QNAP.

Both projects are MIT licensed:

Feedback, bug reports, feature requests, and testing on different QNAP models and storage setups are welcome

Any way to offer compiled binaries for the platforms? The examples you show all talk about .Net for Windows but you say it is cross-platform.

binary’s are in the releases page in the linked git’s extract and run

Ah, missed that. But unfortunately, you do not have a binary for Mac OS.

Unfortunately MacOS is developer hostile due to code signing requirements and I don’t own a machine to test on

there is a python qsirc lib available with cmd line support

command line with minimal effort

I do have a partially completed pyGUI build that might run but I abandoned it in favor of Avalonia because its so much nicer

Thanks for sharing QSurfer and QIndexer with the community! It’s great to see tools like this built around Qsirch, and we really appreciate your contribution.
