Largest Capacity Hard Drive

Hi I have a TVS-471, firmware version QTA 5.2.4.3079. It is set up as a Roon Server following the guide linked below, and also as a Plex server. That means that out of the 4 bays, two drives are configured in RAID 1. Although not full yet I’d like to future-proof the setup as much as possible so am considering upgrading the three HDDs to WD260KFGX 26 TB Red Pro drives. Will that large a drive be supported by my TVS-471 and/or the RAID 1 configuration.

Thanks for your help!

There is no limit on drive capacity, you need to check your inode size though what your maximum volume capacity is

Why are you using a RAID1 and not combine the disks to a RAID5 ? Upgrading single disks is not possible and all the data has to be transferred then back from your backups (always have backups!)

Thanks much for your quick response. I set this up in RAID1 since that was the recommended configuration for the Roon server as indicated at the link in my original post. It’s all been working perfectly for quite a while so I don’t want to “fix” something that “ain’t broke”, just want to maximize my storage capacity.

The third HDD is a backup. But as you point out, you can’t have too many backups, so all data is backed up to a separate drive stored at home, and another at a different location.

How would I go about checking my inode size and determining if that would support the 26 TB drives, and if not, what the largest would be?

Thanks again for your help.

I would not backup inside of the unit (remove the storage, drive, clear it and add it to the RAID1 and create a RAID5)

You check the inode size like this

Thanks dolbyman. The RAID volume has a max size of 63.99 TB (I assume, perhaps incorrectly, that’s due to it having the two drives in it). Unless I’m mistaken two 26 TB drives would seem to be easily accommodated unless I.

And thanks for the callout on backup inside the NAS. Although “somewhat” tech savvy I am obviously NOT the expert in these areas. As I mentioned originally, I set this up based on the recommendation from Roon at the time for the ideal configuration. Since it has all been working flawlessly I’m not inclined to tinker with that although I have no doubt I could make better and more efficient use of the hardware. Just trying to upgrade to more space than I’ll hopefully ever need. And, as mentioned, I don’t rely on that drive as the only backup. I have another that does not stay connected to the NAS (or even plugged up) and another copy in a separate location.

Two 26TB drives in RAID1, makes the volume 26TB (well of course less due to calculation and system overhead)

RAID one was probably just suggested, so a single failure would not break your roon server, RAID5 still has 1 drive tolerance but actually increases your usable space…anyways up to you.
