Managing Backup Space Size in QNAP Cloud

I’ve encountered a situation that I am not sure how to manage other than by what I would call brute force…

I have a 1 TB QNAP Cloud storage space. I’ve been backing up critical files form my NAS to this space for some time. Due to some new files and what not coming in, my backup grew and started to exceed the space available in the cloud drive. The question was and is - how does one manage this?

I have tried reducing the number of copies kept in version manager - backup still fails. I’ve tried reducing the size by removing some directories that don’t really need to be there. Backup still fails due to size…

The only way I have been able to figure this out is to clone the backup and then blow away the existing backed up files and effectively start over. This removes all version history, etc. You have to clone it - you can’t remove the backed up content in the cloud either fully or partially. If you remove all of the backed up data in the cloud, HBS complains and says the storage location is not there. It is expecting access to the dedupe databased apparently. It simply doesn’t work. If you partially delete things, then the backup works, but while HBS thinks it has backed up all your data it does not. Proof of this is that I tried it and HBS showed that I used 145 GB of cloud space for a 900 GB backup set…

So, how can you properly manage backups when where you are trying to backup to is out of space? Seems like this is not a well thought-out part of HBS or am I missing something here?

Deduplication?

Deduplication is already turned on.

The problem is once the cloud storage is full, it appears you can do nothing else with the backup to reduce the size - the backup continues to fail as there’s no space in the destination. There’s no way to manage the backups in that space…

Thank you for raising this question! I will pass your feedback regarding cloud storage backup management on to our internal team.

In the meantime, we will do our best to assist you in completing this backup. May I ask if you are currently running out of space and need more storage to finish the process? Thank you!

Well not any more. Number one I cloned the backup and then removed some files from it to make it smaller. Second, I have upgraded my QNAP cloud storage space. So the problem is gone for the time being…

Yeah, I can confirm this is a real headache. I just upgraded my QNAP Cloud storage space to 2TB from 1 TB. Plenty of space. I then went back in and added what I thought was one of the folders that I had to uncheck previously. Wrong folder! Turns out instead of being just over 1TB, my backup now was over 3TB. So backup failed!

I checked my selected folders and found the mistake I made. I unselected the incorrect folder and selected the one I wanted. Tried to run the backup. No dice. It failed for lack of space.

So now my only choice is to clone the backup, wipe out my backed-up data in my storage space and re-upload a TB AGAIN.

This is something that needs to be fixed. If the backup source content has been changed and is smaller than what is in the cloud, then the system should correct it and allow the backup to complete and remove the content in the cloud that has been removed from the NAS.
