Migrating from QVR Pro to Surveillence 3.0

Firstly, is it worth migrating…feels a bit like I’m going backwards since I recall it was originally called surviellence station some years ago!

I thought I’d try a quick preview so installed 3.0 but when I run it it requests I stop QVR Pro. Also, the documents I’ve read it reports about the licences, I’ve never had to install any on my NAS so how does that work?.. it seemed to include 8 devices by default.

Some guidance would be appreciated.

Thanks

QVR Surveillance is considered version 3 of the QVR product line. Once we release a formal migration tool in QVR Pro (so you can keep your existing recordings), the main features and updates will go to QVR Surveillance only. We will keep our promise to provide security and bug fixes for QVR Pro in a period, but no new features will be added.

Now for the good parts:

  • Simpler licensing: QVR Pro’s licensing is a bit complex. It has channel licenses, GOLD licenses, unlimited playback licenses and so on, which confuses people. QVR Surveillance includes all features with no additional purchase. The only thing you buy is extra channels.
  • Lower resource usage: On the same hardware, QVR Surveillance uses fewer resources than QVR Pro.
  • File-based recordings: Recordings are now stored as files rather than in a database mapping to fuse. This means you can still access the MP4 files directly even when the app is disabled.
  • Free channels: QVR Surveillance comes with a 2-channel license, and you can register it to claim 6 extra channels for free: https://www.qnap.com/en/how-to/tutorial/article/how-to-claim-6-additional-free-channels-in-qvr-surveillance. That gives you the same 8 channels as QVR Pro.

In short:

  • If you’re starting from scratch, choose QVR Surveillance.
  • If you already use QVR Pro and want to keep your recordings, wait for QVR Pro 2.8 (expected by the end of this year).
  • If you don’t need your old recordings, you can disable or uninstall QVR Pro and install QVR Surveillance directly.
