Migration from ReadyNAS - RAID advice needed

New to QNAP and about to migrate from my old ReadyNAS.

Current NAS has 2x 3GB disks in RAID 1 – New system is TS-464 with -TBD- disks

I don’t need that much more storage, so I was thinking that an efficient way to migrate would be to install one new disk in the TS-464, copy my data across, then move one of my existing disks across to create a RAID 1 in the TS-464. Then move the other existing disk across and migrate to RAID 5.

However, though from what I read going from RAID 1 to 5 is a simple process, it is not totally without risk. I really don’t want to lose all the data on the NAS, even if most of it is held on various other systems.

So would my safest option just be to get 2 disks for the TS-464, and use it for a while (RAID 1) before closing down the old ReadsyNAS and moving the disks across - maybe to make a second RAID 1 volume to avoid any risk during a RAID 1 to RAID 5 migration.

Opinions welcome!

These situations are always a good test for your tollerance for dataloss.

If you plan to go through these disk jockey swap style stunts, just to keep your data, you should have a backup. USB Backup drives up to 34TB are probably on sale upcoming (Black) Friday, for instance.

I also guess the old NAS is 2x3TB and not 3GB drives, correct? (3TB should also be very easy and cheap to backup)
