My Experience - Good Unit but Buzzy

My TVS-951X is over 6 years old and still running great. One hard drive (a HGST) reported SMART errors about a year ago so I replaced it with a new one (a Seagate), which couldn’t have been simpler. No data loss. No downtime. It’s also never been hacked. It’s not accessible via the Internet, I use strong, unique passwords and 2FA on every sign-in. It’s also backed up nightly to a third party cloud service.

The only issue with the unit is that the spinning hard drives cause a vibration which makes the chassis and drive bays make a buzzing sound. If I press on the drive bays with my hand, the noise stops, but starts again as soon as I move my hand away. I know tool-less drive bays are convenient, but if the drives were secured with screws the unit would be much quieter. It got so annoying in my office that I moved it to the unfinished part of my basement. So it’s still buzzing all the time, but at least now I don’t hear it. It took a little work running the Ethernet cable to it but definitely worth it.

Other than the buzzing, it’s a great unit!

Have about a dozen and at least that many retired, and I find young or old, tower or rack, all Qnaps like getting buzzed. Some just a bit, some serious stoners. I think that’s why you see increasing numbers of models with no LCD display and no onboard graphics --less motivation for arm’s reach location-- subtle encouragement to choose basement / garage / server room for placement. Challenge pre-sales on it and discover that white noise is feature, not a bug.

There have been plenty of buzzing and vibration topics on the old forums
