My TS-453 Pro pooched (no boot with 4 red lights) ? Upgrade recommendations?

So I upgraded my TS-453 Pro to the latest stable QTS 5.2.9.3499 build yesterday, and all seemed fine after install/reboot. But upon a second reboot it remained in a “system booting” state forever with all 4 drives green. After a few hours I opted to power it down, and start it up again but this time it came on with the dreaded 4 solid red drivebay lights, and once again in a perpetual “system booting” state. I thought maybe OS corruption, RAID corruption/issues, etc.. But after testing it without any drives installed it still won’t boot up, and the drive LEDs are all red (which I don’t believe should light up with disks out).

I attempted to rule out the OS by trying a reset and firmware update via the USB stick, but got nowhere (no audible beeps to suggest it even could reset to factory).

So now it’s just perpetually stuck at “system booting” notice, which leads me to believe a horribly timed hardware failure (LPC clock issue?..). Would you all concur? It’s annoying to me that this was apparently a known-issue and not handled via recall, bit i digress.

If so, and the resistor fix is temporary at best, would you all suggest a TSx73A series as a replacement? I know it’s a few years old now, but I’ve found the LCD screen to be useful in times of trouble…why all models don’t have a useful display is beyond me. The TSx64 is more recent but lacks the LCD screen…

I’m considering upgrading to a 6-bay model for the future, but honestly I should update my existing drives anyway so maybe stick with a 4-bay. Looking for some insight from you folk who have had to do a replacement and what you ended up doing… I used my TS-453Pro for file storage, editing, streaming and I don’t see myself running VMs but you never know…

Many thanks.

I think it’s probably the LPC bug. The NAS is over 11 years old, so it’s time to replace it.
I’d suggest installing the resistor and then switching to a new TS-473A with new HDDs. You can then use the old one as an additional backup device.

The TS-x73A does not have a display. I have one. So if you want a display then you will need to pick a different model.

I have the TS-873A and it works great.

Oh my… I thought there was a traditional LCD behind that long black strip at the top, like my current 453… even AI said so. Guess I can’t trust those overlords. Thank you for confirming that. So now I wonder if there’s even a point, maybe I should just go for something newer, or cheaper with blinky leds because I’m not getting into a TVS series for an LCD at their price points…

Nope.

So a TS-473A looks to cost about $879 on Amazon if you are in the US.

The TS-855X-8G looks to be a nice option for the display. It has an ATOM CPU instead of the Ryzen V1500B of the 473A and the ATOM has almost twice the performance of the V1500B.

This guy is like $1500 so it is more money but you get a lot more NAS. Only you can decide how much you want to spend…

855X and those like it are beyond my budget I’m afraid… But thank you for the suggestion!
